This second Battle of Coruscant was a major battle between the New Republic and Imperial forces under the command of Director Ysanne Isard, fought several months after the liberation of Coruscant. It began as a small-scale skirmish, but rapidly escalated when previously unknown Imperial assets were revealed by Isard.

Battle

In an attempt to provide cover for his impending defection, Palpatine Counterinsurgency Front leader Kirtan Loor ordered his troops to attack a bacta storage facility in Invisec. This also served as a measure of personal revenge against Fliry Vorru, who controlled the facility. Vorru, however, recognized the signs of the impending attack, and informed Borsk Fey'lya. Fey'lya in turn arranged for Rogue Squadron and a commando squad to thwart the attack. At the PCF base, several civilian airspeeders and a trio of All Terrain Scout Transports were discovered, along with PCF ground troops. The walkers and troops were quickly eliminated, but a single heavily-laden airspeeder, which Wedge Antilles realized contained the bomb meant for the bacta facility, managed to escape. With the aid of observers on an orbital skyhook, Antilles chased down the airspeeder and managed to destroy it before it could reach its target.

At that time, a much greater threat emerged near the Manarai Mountains. Three squadrons of TIE/ln starfighters and TIE/In starfighters were launched toward the Rogues, and Executor-class Star Dreadnought Lusankya emerged from beneath Imperial City, propelled toward orbit by a massive repulsorlift platform. The gargantuan warship demolished every structure within over a hundred square kilometers, resulting in millions of civilian deaths. As it ascended into orbit, the Lusankya also destroyed a skyhook with turbolaser fire. The remaining TIEs rushed back to the Star Dreadnought, but only five of the original thirty-six survived the battle. Rogue pilot Erisi Dlarit, in pursuit of the TIEs, claimed to have been caught in a tractor beam. However, her R5 astromech refuted the claim, revealing that she had been an Imperial spy.

While Rogue Squadron returned to base for refueling, the Lusankya continued to climb and turned its weapons toward Coruscant's planetary shields. The ship quickly punched a hole in the shields and passed through, and encountered a Golan III orbital defense station. The station quickly exchanged fire with the Super Star Destroyer, but the Lusankya jettisoned its repulsorlift platform, which absorbed much of the Golan III station's attack. The Lusankya then jumped to hyperspace on a course to Thyferra, where Isard quickly took control of the vital bacta-producing planet, with the full support of the Xucphra Corporation.

Aftermath

In the aftermath of the battle, the New Republic Provisional Council was unwilling to intervene on Thyferra, as they feared interfering with the internal politics of a non-Republic world would cause severe political damage to the fledgling Galactic government. Following the lead of Corran Horn, nearly every member of Rogue Squadron resigned in order to stage their own independent effort to overthrow Isard, thus allowing Antilles to keep his promise to Ashern member Qlaern Hirf. The conflict which followed was known as the Bacta War. Yet it was the result of this battle that the New Republic had truly replaced the Galactic Empire since they had properly claimed the Galactic capital, which succeeded the Bright Tree Village on Sanctuary Moon as the confederate capital, there fore the Imperial Remnant had been born.

The Second Battle of Coruscant was a decisive battle in the Galactic Civil War. It was fought between the Galactic Empire, led by Tricolus and Supreme Commander Adam Harmon and the New Republic led by Admiral Ackbar. The battle had two phases; the Space Battle and the Ground Battle.

Space battle

Ackbar leads the attack against Death's Breath

The Space Battle lasted for two hours of intense combat. Although the larger Republic Fleet outgunned the Imperial Fleet, in the slugmatch that followed, the Imperials had the advantage, due to thier excellant training and great leadership. In order to get a fighting chance, Lando Calrissen and Han Solo, flying the Millenium Falcon, led the fighters in a daring attack upon the Star Destroyers, skimming so close to the battleships that they could not be seen until they were already past.

Despite this bold strategy, the Republic was hampered by the Dark Laser, a superweapon that much like the cannons used by the Old Republic during the Clone Wars, would fire a single continuos laser. This laser would tear apart ships with ease. Despite the fact it took thirty seconds to recharge after each use, several Republic ships were destroyed.

They only gained the upper hand once the massive shield generator had been destroyed, destroyed by an A-Wing pilot that kamikazed into the base of the tower after TIE Interceptors from Tricolus Squadron shot it down. Another turning point came after they captured the Dark Laser, which had wrecked so much havoc that they had to get up so close to the Harmon’s Fleet that debris from hit ships would damage other ships, forcing the superweapon to stop firing for fear of hitting thier own ships. Upon capturing this weapon, the Republic turned it onto the Empire, destroying two ships.

Harmon wanted to save his fleet, but Tricolus was bound and determined to recapture the Dark Laser and hold Coruscant at all costs. Two more ships were destroyed trying to retake the weapon, and Harmon had it destroyed by concentrated fire. Harmon attacked and subdued Tricolus, much to the gratefulness of his fleet. Harmon pulled his fleet out in time to avoid a massacre of his own ships.

Ground battle

705th Stormtooper Legion Wiped Out Along Garbage Street

The ground battle lasted for two days, the trapped 705, 880 and 501st Legions fighting to the last man to save their capitol, against overwhelming odds. In some places, the defense was so intense, that Republic dead would be buried ten deep.

In one last ditch attempt to escape, they launched an all out attack with PTT walkers and AT-AT walkers which only halted the Republic long enough to flank them. But, the attack steamrolled forward. With no hope of escape, the stormtroopers vowed to fight to the last man. And they kept thier promise.

The first legion to be wiped out was 705th Legion, when, unable to take the street by storm, and unable to make the enemy surrender, the Republic bombed the street with ten bombing runs. Not a man was left alive. The second Legion to be wiped out was the 880th Legion, defending the Senate. Many of the survivors held out in the Senate itself, and it would take days to clean the bodies out of the halls. Ironically, the last one to die fell on the raised dias of the Speaker of the House.

The last place to be taken was the Imperial Palace, guarded by none other then the 501st Legion (aka Vader's First). Only 25 were captured, but only because these men were knocked out when the room they were guarding had it's roof collapse on them and knocked them out.

Aftermath

It was the single bloodiest land battle in the Galactic Civil War, and resulted in the capture and liberation of Coruscant by the New Republic. It wouldn't be until 10 ABY that it would be recaptured by the Empire, after the Mardonis Campaign.

Behind the scenes

  • This was the climax of the book Rise to Imperial Glory.
  • The author was disgusted at how easily Coruscant fell in canonized literature, so, this was meant to rectify the mistake.
