Background

Bigsley's personality is that of an overworked genius with little patience for those he feels have not earned their status. He constantly belittles and insults everyone around him, both his initiates and the Lone Wanderer. While it might be assumed that this is because managing the Purifier and water distribution has placed him under excessive stress, talking to him reveals that he was kicked out of all three orders, after (he claims) the lead Scribe of each order felt threatened by his ability and intellect.

For example, his modified laser rifles resulted in the wounding of some initiates (due to the initiates' inability to handle the extra power output). After being transferred to the Order of the Shield, he antagonized Scribe Bowditch by calling the latter's theories outdated. He was then transferred to the Order of the Scrolls, where he quickly ran afoul of Scribe Jameson (who previously condemned Scribe Yearling to a life-threatening assignment at the Arlington Library for similar reasons). He has also, like many others, questioned Elder Lyons. In the end, he even felt that he had lost the support of Scribe Rothchild, who transferred him to the Purifier project, an assignment Bigsley feels is akin to exile.

Interactions with the player character

Main article: Holy Water (quest)
Main article: The Amazing Aqua Cura

Once the Purifier has been activated, Bigsley and several neophyte scribes take up residence at Jefferson Memorial. They work on solving the problem of delivering the processed fresh water around the Capital Wasteland and provide the player with the side quests of Broken Steel, all related to the water problem. Holy Water and Protecting The Water Way and their rewards are obtained by talking to him, while The Amazing Aqua Cura can be obtained through a speech check, by hacking his computer, or with low enough karma.

Notes

  • When visiting Scribe Bigsley, several Scribes can be seen waiting outside of his office. There are always Scribes waiting to give their reports and will engage him in several interesting conversations that the player can listen to. Some of these interactions (especially with the Scribe who had just returned from the Citadel) relate to the quest The Amazing Aqua Cura such as the implication that the water Bigsley has been selling to Griffon on the side was actually part of the shipment intended for the Citadel.
  • Hacking his computer will allow the player to read many humorous log entries as well as notes on the success of the water distribution.
  • Bigsley is an essential character, unless and until you decide to destroy the Citadel at the end of Who Dares Wins.

Appearances

Bigsley appears in the Fallout 3 add-on Broken Steel.
