Characteristics

The Scarab starfighter was a droid starfighter with a flat body and two outrigger wings, each connected to the main fuselage by a pair of heavy struts. The wings could lock down against the body while not in flight, and spring open to achieve maximum maneuverability in combat.

This multiple-purpose class could attack targets in space, within a planet's atmosphere, or on the ground. Even though it lacked the agility of the later Vulture-class, the Scarab-class was equipped with strong armor and deflector shields. Scarabs were also able to operate independently of a droid control unit, whereas the Vultures could not.

History

Scarab starfighters were tested by the Trade Federation in the Naboo system and the Karthakk system prior to the Invasion of Naboo. Though effective, the Scarabs proved no match for the combined forces of Rhys Dallows, Vana Sage and Nym's pirates, who helped slow the Federation's march on Naboo and Lok.

Though supplanted by the Vulture-class, Scarab-class starfighters were still in use at least ten years later, prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars.
