The Salamand Entite is an enemy in the game Final Fantasy XII. It is the Fire-elemental Entite, and is found at the Primary Tank Complex or Central Junction in the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea when there are no clouds and the sun shines brightly, however it will still occasionally appear while "sandstorms" are occurring. It is also the only entity that is present most of the time on a map, unlike other entities that require special weather conditions in order to appear. It is likely to be the first Entite the player will encounter in the game, unless they venture into the Westersand during a sandstorm before entering the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea.

Page 1: Observations

When the gods looked down on Man, shivering in his ignorance, they bestowed upon him the gift of fire. So did the gods give both warmth and knowledge to Man. Gradually, Man grew wiser, and made many things. Yet, when war came, he used the fire of the gods for the taking of life, and the gods became angry, scorching the world.

In this inferno was born the salamand entite.

Page 2: The Entite Pact

"To prevent the ne'er-sated hunger of flame from consuming all, drink only from that water which will ne'er parch, and thereby shall it be sated.

Only then shall the shining electrum be revealed at last beneath burnt-weary ash."

Battle

Like the other Entites, its attacks consist of Silencega, Sleepga, and Fear, which reduces one character's MP. Its attack spell is Firaga. Also, like the other Entites, it is docile, but attacks when provoked or when Magic is used nearby. It should be avoided during the party's first visit to the Sandsea during broad daylight, as it is the most powerful Entite offensively along with Mardu Entite, unless you are trying to obtain an Arcturus early in the game, in which case you need one rare steal from this Entite as one of the ingredients to unlock the gun in the Bazaar.

Etymology

Salamand Entite is named after the mythological reptile Salamander, who was believed to be able to breathe and resist fire. In legends, ancient alchemists are said to use Salamanders to determine the heat of the fire necessary to turn lead to gold.

Salamand is also the name of a town in Final Fantasy II that is visited several times in the game. However, the Salamand of Final Fantasy II is a cold and snowy town, and the similarity in name may simply be a coincidence.
