From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

The Rune two-handed sword is a two-handed sword that is stronger than the adamant 2h sword. Like all rune weapons, it requires 40 Attack to wield. It is the strongest two-handed sword available to free players and also serves as a "knockout weapon" for many players in pvp minigames, especially melee pures switching between a rune scimitar and a rune two-handed sword, as they lower the opponents HP then switch to the Rune Two-Hander for a more accurate and higher hit. It is also used by ranged/melee hybrids because a maple shortbow on rapid is faster than a rune scimitar, which provides even faster killing. Players can forge a rune two-handed sword using the Smithing skill at level 99, using three rune bars, a hammer, and an anvil, giving the player 225 Smithing experience. This item can be bought from the Grand Exchange in Varrock.

Although it is considered one of the best weapons on RuneScape Classic, and the free-to-play part of the main RuneScape game, it is not often used in pay-to-play due to its slow speed and its inadequate strength bonus, being only 1 point less than the Dragon longsword, which is often the first dragon item purchased and used by new members. Also, there are many more weapons that are stronger than the Rune 2h sword.

Being the strongest non-degradable melee weapon usable by players on non-members' servers, it is the most expensive stable melee weapon in non-members server and the second most popular weapon both in terms of marketing and combat use - behind only the rune scimitar. At one point, it was the single most powerful weapon in the game, and even today is commonly cited as the best weapon in free-to-play.

Pros and Cons of Using a Rune 2h Sword

With Rune two-handed swords being as popular as they are, they are often praised for their advantages while criticised for their disadvantages, as listed below.

Pros:

  • Strongest non-degradable weapon in F2P, giving a +70 strength bonus.
  • Very accurate - the most accurate non-degrading weapon in F2P Runescape.
  • Good for "knocking out" opponents in combat minigames.
  • Good for hit-and-run techniques.
  • Allows players to train all 3 melee stats.
  • Has two different attack styles: Slash and Crush.

Cons:

  • Poor attack speed.
  • Fairly expensive compared to other Rune weapons.
  • Removes the option for a shield - for players with lower defence, it is recommended for them to use a battleaxe instead.

Trivia

  • The Rune two-handed sword existed in very early versions of RuneScape and was given to some testers. After it was deemed "too powerful", it was removed. Also, in the beginning version of RuneScape, the Rune two-handed sword was sometimes sold for 1 million coins each.
  • When the Rune two-handed sword was put back into the game, this weapon was used by nearly all Player-Killers [Pkers] capable of wielding it, because in Runescape Classic there were no weapon speeds. This also made it by far, the most popular weapon for non-members in Runescape Classic. Nearly all non-members who could afford and wield one used the Rune two-handed except for a small minority of players who preferred to use a Rune battleaxe, which enabled them to raise their Defence by wielding a Rune kiteshield.
  • There was no necessary attack level to wield any weapon before an update in 2002 which contributed to the Rune two-handed sword's popularity.
  • On 17 September 2009, an update changed the appearance of it, making it look like a rune long sword being held in both hands or a bit like a Saradomin Sword.
