Cid's Dreams Crash

Several years before the beginning of the game, the city was bustling with scientists, because the first rocket launch to outer space was to take place here, on the rocket Shinra No. 26; however, after Shera noticed a leak in one of the engines, she stayed behind to fix it, while the rocket was about to launch. This caused Cid to abort the launch, causing the rocket to crash down and be badly damaged. This embarrassment caused Shinra to largely abandon the space project and give it meager funds over the years. Cid would blame the failure of his dreams on Shera for a long time afterward, and so treats her poorly.

Episode 15 of Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII- changes events to claim that AVALANCHE sabotaged the rocket's engines. It also reveals that Rufus Shinra was the one who recommended the cancellation of the Space Program, with the support of the entire Shinra Executive Staff.

Cloud's First Visit

Years later, Cloud Strife and his party come to Rocket Town in search of Sephiroth. They meet with Cid and learn that President Rufus Shinra has come to Rocket Town. This is fulfillment of Cid's hopes that the space program will finally again be given funds. Instead, Rufus just wants Cid's airplane, the Tiny Bronco. Once again, Cid's dreams are sent crashing down. He betrays Shinra and fights his boss Palmer along with Cloud and the party. They use the Tiny Bronco to escape, but it is badly damaged, and now can only be used as a crude boat.

Into Space

Rocket Town with Meteor overhead

Rocket Town does not again factor into the plot until the second Disc, once Sephiroth has unleashed Meteor onto the Planet, and after Cloud has returned to sanity. The party now fights with Shinra over the Huge Materia. Shinra's plan is to launch the Materia with Cid's Rocket into space, right into Meteor. The hope is that the explosion will be so great that Meteor will be destroyed, thus saving the Planet.

Cloud and his party will not let his happen. They fight through the Turk Rude and take control of rocket. Palmer gleefully tells them that the rocket is sent to automatically launch, and pushes the button that launches all of them into outer space with the rocket. It seems that Cid's plans will be fulfilled just before his death in the explosion.

Luckily there is an escape pod in the back of the rocket, which allows the party to flee. Before the party can leave, the last Huge Materia can be rescued from the rocket. To get it a code must be punched in. Cid will try to give hints, but they do not seem to mean anything. The actual code is:

Whether or not the Materia is rescued, the rocket still crashes into Meteor and creates a blinding explosion massive enough to be seen around the entire Planet. However, Meteor is unaffected, and it continues its cataclysmic fall down.
