Not to be confused with Granite crabs and the Giant Rock Crabs.
A rock crab wakes up and attacks an approaching player

Rock crabs are aggressive monsters that look like harmless rocks while they are sleeping, and wake up and attack unsuspecting players that pass by. After they are woken up and have stopped chasing their target, they are no longer aggressive. These monsters are quite popular training monsters, because of their low combat level and high hitpoints. Rock crabs are also a good source of gold charms for lower level players. Most rock crabs are located in Multi-combat areas, making them good targets for cannons. However, many players consider cannons to be a form of kill stealing. It should be noted that, unlike other enemies and NPCs, rock crabs are not marked with yellow dots on the minimap. This is probably due to the fact that the crabs' appearance camouflages them as rocks. Rock crabs start off looking just like a bunch of rocks until you walk near them, which makes them 'wake up' and they start attacking you. After a while they stop attacking you even when you walk near them, just run down to the Rellekka entrance then back to the rock crabs and they should start attacking again.

In the quest Fur 'n' Seek, its carcass must be collected and cleaned for the Odd Old Man

Classification

It is unknown if these creatures are actually crabs, or some form of insect shaped like a crab. This is due to the fact that, while all rock crabs seem to live and hunt on land, most specimens have been seen near some form of water, making it possible for them to migrate between land and water. It is also possible that the crabs have evolved to a point where they do not need periodical water immersion to survive. But, it is certain that they are one of these two possibilities, as in Fur n' Seek, the rock crab is shown to have no hide or skin whatsoever, only a shell.

Trivia

  • When rock crabs are camouflaged, if you look at them closely, you can see some of their legs showing.
  • There was once a rumour that rock crabs give 4x the amount of experience, but this is false.
  • When picking up a drop from a larger rock crab kill, it makes the motion of picking a crop or smelting a bar.
  • The examine option for the crabs is considered by many to be obscene.
  • It is considered to "crab-up" when a player runs around making the rock crabs aggressive to him/herself.
  • The examine option for the crabs refers to itchy rashes, etc.
  • The examine option for the crab when it is camouflaged is different when it is active
