Rao was a male Starfleet engineer in the 24th century.

As of 2376, Lieutenant Roa served aboard the USS Musgrave. (SCE eBook: Security)

By 2379, Rao was serving aboard the USS Enterprise-E, and that year was sent to Tezwa's Linoka Forest, as part of the Echo team under the command of Lieutenant Taurik, to destroy the nadion-pulse cannon firebase located there. (TNG novel: A Time to Kill)

After Prime Minister Kinchawn went into exile, Rao assisted in several efforts on the surface. He was part of the team that searched for survivors from the Deelatava attack, finding the lifesigns of Ambassador Lagan Serra and Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge. After Starfleet captured several contraband cargo shipments, Rao was one of the engineers who cataloged the parts and discovered conversion equipment and instructions intended to implicate the Tholians in the construction of the nadion-pulse cannons. (TNG novel: A Time to Heal)

Rao was noted for making asna dumplings. (SCE eBook: Security)

The reuse of this character's surname in the SCE and TNG stories is likely coincidental, but there is no information to preclude their being the same person.

Rao was the name attributed to a divine entity observed in Kryptonian religious practices. In Krypton’s ancient past, Rao was regarded as a god of the sun, and as such, Krypton's star was named in his honor. Erok-El, founder of the El family dynasty considered beings born with red hair a sign of Rao's divine influence and made it a common practice that all male citizens with red hair were automatically accepted into the Kryptonian military.

The Kryptonian leader, Jaf-El, later established a monotheistic culture, wherein Rao was the sole god of all of Krypton. Churches were established in Rao's name and it was common for people of reputable bearing to procure lives for themselves as priests of Rao. Those who follow the path of Rao are often referred to as Raoists.

Modern interpretation

In the Post-Crisis continuity, Rao was regarded as a mythological figure, whose influence ebbed some time during the 6th historical epoch. Members of the Kryptonian Science Council attempted to revitalize interest in the church of Rao as a means of destabilizing a rival religious faction led by the pacifist Sen-M.

  • The possessive form of Rao is pronounced Ro.
  • Kryptonians would often invoke Rao's name during moments of surprise or duress. Exclamations such as "By Rao!" were a common form of slang.
  • The star system where Krypton is located is referred to as the Rao system.

  • Rao was also the name of a god of peace in the World of Greyhawk setting for the Dungeons and Dragons role playing game.
  • Rao is a common surname in China and Taiwan.
