A prefect is a title which is given to an administrative official, who is often placed in a supervisory position over a district, planet, or sector. Amongst the civilizations to use the title are Argelians, Cardassians and Kelvans.

Prefect was the title used by the head of Vulcan's Offworld Service, first used by Savar, and later by T'Saaf. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)

In 2267, Jaris held the position of prefect on Argelius II. (TOS episode: "Wolf in the Fold")

Between 2346 and 2369, Gul Skrain Dukat served as the Prefect of Bajor during the Cardassian Union's Occupation of Bajor. (DS9 episodes: "Emissary", "Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night")

Prefect was a general title of power given to several officials throughout the galaxy, as well as among the Yuuzhan Vong, who also had a High Prefect. An example of a prefect was that of the Yuuzhan Vong, Da'Gara. Yuuzhan Vong Prefects functioned as planetary governors and the commanders of worldships.

A praefect was the highest religious and administrative rank amongst the Nazzar followers of the Ulizra religion of Nazzri.

Behind the scenes

The term prefect comes from the Latin praefectus, which was the title of a magistrate appointed as governor of one of the Roman provinces, an example being Pontius Pilate.
