Pip (on the left) and Pop

Pip and Pop are two inseparable purple otters who live on the otter pond behind the Big Blue House on Bear in the Big Blue House. They are cousins, and share a set of grandparents: Otto and Etta Otter. They are both obsessed with clams (though Pip loves steamed clams, whereas Pop loves stuffed clams), and enjoy the game of checkers. They often speak simultaneously --- saying or singing the same thing in unison.

They look almost identical, but there are a couple of minor differences. Pop's ears are slightly higher on his head, and his eyes are slightly larger and closer together than Pip's. Thus, "Pop's ears are on top" and Pip's ears are towards the front. Another difference Pip and Pop have noted about themselves is that Pop is able to make some very funny faces that Pip isn't able to. According to Noel MacNeal, "Pip was always on camera left. So ... it's Peter Linz on the left, and Tyler [Bunch] on the right."[1]

When Pip and Pop aren't at the Big Blue House, they can often be found at the Otter Pond. This is no surprise, as they love water. They can also be found hanging out and playing in the bathtub a fair amount.

One of Pip and Pop's favorite toys is a talking clam named Clammy, which they receive in the mail in "The Way I Feel Today."

They were both brown in the pitch tape for the series.[2]

Notable Episodes

  • "Love Is All You Need" - Pip and Pop explore love and perform the "Otter Love Rap," also featured in other episodes and the live show.
  • "Rockin' Rocko" - Pip and Pop's cousin Rocko pays a visit to the Big Blue House.
  • "At the Old Bear Game" - Pip and Pop meet their baseball hero and learn some things they never knew about Bear.

History

Pip is a Laxadazian of minor royalty (260th in line for the throne). He had interest in art and spent much of his time drawing portraits of the night sky.

On one such idea, he found a group of Laxadazian trolls, who were considered a subspecies and degenerates to be shunned by the others. After a long night of drinking with them, Pip awoke to find that he had gained the characteristics of a troll. Their liquor must have had some type of altering quality. Although he tried to hide it, this transformation as well as his behavior caused him to be exiled.

He spent time in various bars and seedy places. The Magus's forces came to Laxadazia and ordered the destruction of all trolls. Pip was captured and placed on a ship designated for those to be executed. He met and became an ally of Adam Warlock during his fight against the Magus. After the Magus was defeated, the two briefly parted ways.

Pip's mind was destroyed by Thanos, but Warlock placed him into his Soul Gem and they along with Gamora eventually were reformed in new bodies. Pip was a loyal and valued member of the Infinity Watch.

Later, Pip searched for Warlock (who had been in hibernation) at the request of Thanos, who was searching for a way to deal with the Thanosi.

Pip also helped Thanos and Galactus against the entity known as Hunger. As thanks, Thanos had him thrown out with the trash. Pip returned to working with Gamora and Adam Warlock.

The Star Trek Expanded Universe Database is for fanon and related content. See Memory-Alpha.org for the canon Star Trek wiki.

Rank insignia are generally used by races and cultures that wear uniforms. In humanoids, rank can be displayed by stripes (such as braid) on the sleeves or epaulet, or in the form of pins (like pips and lozenges), embroidered insignia and patches. These of course differ between civilizations.

Lists of rank insignia

Types

Braid

Braid (or rank stripes) are bands of fabric or metallic material designed to denote rank on a uniform. Officers of Earth's United States Navy were known to wear rank stripes on sleeves and epaulets. That system was similar to insignia used in some eras of Starfleet history.

The Earth Starfleet of the 22nd century used rank stripes on dress uniforms for officers and on the standard jackets of flag officers. The mirror universe's Terran Starfleet used stripes on the standard uniform epaulets for officers, and both the epaulets and sleeves for flag officers.

In the 2250s, Starfleet used stripes of braid for both officers and noncommissioned officers, on the sleeves of standard uniforms and on the epaulets of dress uniforms. By the 2260s, only officers above ensign wore sleeve rank stripes, and only on standard uniforms. The 2260s dress uniforms denoted rank by braid around the collar, again only for officers. In the 2270s, all officers wore rank stripes, either on the sleeves or epaulet, depending on the uniform.

Chevron and rocker

Chevrons and rockers are stripe insignia that were used in many of Earth's land, air, and naval forces to denote enlisted rank.

Epaulette

Epaulettes are devices worn on the shoulder, quite frequently to denote rank or grade, or perhaps honor.

Lozenge

The lozenge is what is commonly referred to as a diamond. It is found in a deck of playing cards, and in the rank of a first sergeant.

Pip

Pips are the small metal pins worn to denote rank, particularly on 24th century Starfleet uniforms.

Star

Stars, in the vernacular of rank insignia, are insignia, often used to denote flag officers. The United States armed forces used groups of these insignia for generals and admirals. A similar approach was used by Starfleet, as flag officer epaulet insignia in the 2270s.

The Star Trek Encyclopedia refers to TNG era flag ranks with the term "star" even though the insignia used are pips in a frame. It lists one and two star admiral, three star admiral, four star admiral and five star admiral as the meanings of various rank insignia, but the one and five star versions are never seen onscreen.

The US Navy also used stars in conjunction with chevrons in their enlisted insignia, as opposed to the rockers used with chevrons in equivalent US armed forces.
