Dr Who

From TARDIS Index File, the free Doctor Who reference.

A pig is a four-legged animal native to Earth. They were domesticated from wild boars and were raised mainly for their meat. Certain religions, like Islam and Judaism, forbid the eating of pigs, a practise that continued and evolved even after pigs went extinct. (BNA: The Mary-Sue Extrusion)

Pigs were also used for a variety of experiments, likely due to their prevalence. In 1930s New York, the Cult of Skaro turned the less intelligent people they captured into Pig slaves to work for them. (DW: Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks) In 2006, a pig was augmented by the Slitheen family as a hoax alien invader. (DW: Aliens of London) In the 51st century, a cyborg with the brain of a pig (Mr. Sin) was created. (DW: The Talons of Weng-Chiang)

A pig, hog, or swine is a mammal native to the planet Earth where it was bred and raised for food, such as bologna or bacon. (TOS episode: "The City on the Edge of Forever", TNG episode: "Up the Long Ladder")

Sesame Street Pigs

Sesame Street has maintained its own set of pigs over the years. The series initially used a variation of the Hot Pink AM pattern (still retained for certain characters), and later introduced a group of four-legged, semi-realistic pigs, who could be used as farmyard oinkers or in speaking roles, as the need demanded.

The Patrol Investment Group, also known as the Patrol Invest Group or PIGS are a security firm featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. They mainly operate as a legitimate security force out of DBP Security, but are also involved in some illegal protection services. They patrol the North Point Mall area, Escobar International Airport, Leaf Links Country Club, and Starfish Island. Due to their North Point location, they are frequently in conflict with the Sharks; police act against both parties when gun battles occur.

The PIGs appear many times throughout the story of GTA Vice City. They provide protection for Congressman Alex Shrub and the band Love Fist, and have links to the Vice City Triads, providing protection for their illegal counterfeiting operation. At one point the PIGs attempt to move in on Tommy Vercetti's protection rackets in Ocean Beach; Tommy wipes out the guards involved, and destroys their office.

PIGs are not ordinarily hostile to Tommy, and will only attack in self-defense. They patrol Starfish Island, and may attack or be attacked by the Vercetti Gang if they enter the grounds of Tommy's mansion. They will also attack the player if they fire a weapon, weather it was aimed at them or not.

A stock photo of a wild razorback boar

Several wild razorback boars have been featured in Lost and The Lost Experience. Wild boars can reach up to 440 lb (200 kg) and can be up to 6 feet (1.8 m) long. If surprised or cornered, they may become aggressive and can cause injury with their tusks. However, this is quite rare and usually only occurs if a sow feels the need to defend her piglets.

On the Island

Native to the Island

The boars on Lost may or may not be native to the Island. Although razorback boar are not native to islands in the South Pacific, crews of ships would often transport them to newly discovered islands as a preemptive source of food should the island be colonized later. The time between discovery and colonization could be many years, giving four boars (two male and two females) the opportunity to have multiple litters before colonists arrived. Wild chickens were also transported in the same way.

Production notes

  • The "Lost: On Location (Season 1)" special featurette starts with a clip called "The Trouble with Boars". (Lost: The Complete First Season)
  • In a deleted scene of "Two for the Road", Hurley told Libby that he missed his hog, a pot-bellied pig named Chester.

A dead pig roasting on a fire can be found in Rellekka.

Pigs are non-interactive characters found in Draynor Village and the farm south of Falador. Pigs cannot be truly considered non-player characters, since players cannot interact with them in any way.

Players cannot attack or kill pigs, and thus they are not a source of food. Whilst there is a pig roasting on a fire in Rellekka, this is purely part of the scenery.

The Pigs in Draynor Village are in a pen owned by the G.A.G.

All pigs have received a slight graphical update as of September 2009.They are now more realistic-looking, yet their feet do not move while they walk, making it look as they are simply sliding.
