Rydia under Paralyze in Final Fantasy IV.

Paralyze, also known as Stun (スタン Sutan) and Threaten is a recurring spell and status effect which prohibits characters from taking action. It is different from Stop in that it does not last as long.

Appearances

Final Fantasy

Paralysis prevents the afflicted unit from participating in battle. There is a chance of recovery at the end of each turn and the status does not last after battle.

A Black Mage casting STUN.

The spell Stun, also known as STUN in the Famicom release, is a level 6 Black Magic spell which almost always inflicts Paralysis on a single enemy, unless they are immune. It has a much higher success rate than Hold, a similar, lower level spell.

The spell can be bought at Crescent Lake and can be learnt by the Black Mage and Black Wizard Job classes. In the Dawn of Souls and 20th Anniversary Edition releases it costs 20 MP to cast.

Final Fantasy II

Paralyze prevents the afflicted unit from participating in battle. There is a chance of recovery at the end of each round and does not last after battle. It can be removed by the spell Basuna at level 5 or higher. This is the only status effect that is mentioned in the game's Bestiary if a particular enemy is weak against it.

The spell Stun is a Black Magic spell which inflicts Paralyze on one or all enemies. The success rate increases with the spell's level. As with all spells, any character can learn Stun by having them use the Stun Tome (called the Stun Scroll in the Origins release). It was mistranslated as "Stone" in the J2e fan translation. The spell Stop can also inflict Paralyze on a target.

Stun Tome
Effect Allows the target to learn Stun when used outside of battle. Casts Stun VIII when used in battle.

Stun is a status effect that temporarily stops action.

Final Fantasy X

Threaten is a Special ability found in Auron's section of the Sphere Grid. It costs 12 MP to use. The Threaten status lasts until the caster's next turn. Shiva's Heavenly Strike also inflicts Threaten.

Final Fantasy XI

Paralyze is a White Magic and Enfeebling Magic spell that inflicts a status effect of the same name. The status effect Paralyze can be gained in many other ways, including many different enemy abilities. The spell itself is relatively low level and can potentially last for minutes. While in effect a player may or may not be able to perform an action. Rather randomly, a player's turn may be negated with the simple notification that "______ is paralyzed." If a player was attempting to use an ability or item and is paralyzed, the ability will be subject to the recast timer as if it went off successfully or the item will be lost.

Dissidia Final Fantasy

Stun is a Brave Attack for Shantotto, which stuns the opponent and prevents them from doing anything. It can be used at level 29.

(14000 gp per backpack)
(14000 gp to players)
Effect: Paralyzes target. Any healing on this target will cancel the spell.
Notes: This is a very expensive rune, which can only be used/created by druids. Not only does it cost 1400 mana to make, but it also requires 1400 mana AND 3 soul points to use. The only other rune that requires mana to use is the Convince Creature rune.
Many creatures are immune to Paralysis, and any creatures that are Self-Healing will cancel the paralysis when they heal themselves.

Paralyze runes are mostly used in war. Since you can heal only once per step, the paralyze rune will slow down your opponent and allow your team to combo the enemy to death.

This rune was once available for all vocations with magic level 18 and higher to use, however; not anymore!
