The Pah-wraiths are non-corporeal beings once native to the Bajoran wormhole. According to Bajoran texts, at some point millennia ago, the Pah-wraiths became enemies of the Prophets, and were allegedly banished from the wormhole to the Fire Caves on Bajor. Bajoran texts also record the Pah-wraiths as being "false Prophets". (DS9 episodes: "The Assignment", "The Reckoning", "Tears of the Prophets", "Shadows and Symbols", "'Til Death Do Us Part", "Strange Bedfellows", "What You Leave Behind")

There were at least two groups of Pah-wraith; the first were led by Kosst Amojan who led the war against the Prophets and were banished within the Fire Caves for their actions. The second group were a minority who did not aid their brethren during the battle and, instead, fled into Jalbador, the second wormhole. (DS9 - Millennium novel: Inferno)

The Pah-wraiths were noncorporeal energy beings who shared an antithetical relationship with the so-called Prophets of Bajoran religion, equivalent to "demons" in Earth mythology.

By the 28th century the Pah-Wraiths had escaped their confines of the Bajoran Fire Caves and had been fighting a semi-non-coporeal war with the Prophets for some time. This fighting had caused some beings from each side to fall into the mortal realm and take organic form.

The Alliance (28th century) had taken these fallen Wraiths as their leaders. Although, the Wraith took the position, they never cared much for Alliance politics. (Star Trek: 001: "Restoration")

In one alternate universe, the Pah-Wraiths were the dominant force of Bajor by the 24th century, forcing worshippers of the Prophets underground. Calling themselves the "True Prophets," they drove the Bajoran people into a period of aggressive expansionism. The Pah-Wraith-influenced Bajorans took particular umbrage at the Cardassians, who in their universe were devout believers in the Oralian Way, and instigated a brutal jihad against Cardassia Prime and its territories, from which the Cardassians had still not freed themselves as of 2370.
