"The strategy is working perfectly, my lord. The Jedi and their forces are spread thinly across the Outer Rim territories in a vain effort to contain our new offensive."
Grievous to Palpatine

The Outer Rim Sieges were the series of fierce battles that took place throughout the planets of the galaxy's Outer Rim territories, such as Saleucami and Mygeeto, which marked the final phase of the Clone Wars.

History

Holomap of the Outer Rim Sieges.

The campaign began after the Republic won a series of key battles on Commenor and Balmorra, which drove the CIS from its bases in the Core and Colonies.

By General Grievous's command, the Confederate Navy retreated to the Mid and Outer Rims, reinforcing its vast holdings on either side of the Slice. Millions of Separatist ships were marshalled at Xagobah, Sluis Van, Siskeen, Clak'dor VII, Boz Pity, and other fortress worlds in order to draw in the Republic forces.

Emboldened by the Separatists' seemingly hasty retreat, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and the Jedi deployed nearly every fleet element and troop carrier to the Rim borders with orders to lay siege to the CIS bases on Ord Radama, Ryloth, Xagobah, Saleucami, and elsewhere in the hope that a steady siege would collapse the Separatist strongholds and force the Confederacy to surrender. Morale throughout the Core was high, as many believed that the end of the war was near, and that the Confederacy would be expelled from the spiral arms and brought to justice.

In reality, the purpose of the Outer Rim Sieges was to enmesh the majority of the Republic's forces at the fringes of its borders. Once committed, the Jedi and their armies found themselves unable to break off, leaving Coruscant and the Core Worlds vulnerable to a major strike force led by General Grievous six months later. This strike force abducted the chancellor, but were eventually defeated and the chancellor was brought back to Coruscant.

The Sieges—and the war in general—were brought to an abrupt end when Palpatine ordered the Republic's clone troopers to carry out Order 66, a contingency plan meant to deal with the Jedi should they ever betray the Republic. Spread thinly throughout the galaxy and isolated from each other, the Jedi were caught off guard when their clone soldiers turned on them, and most of them were killed immediately in the opening minutes of what became the Great Jedi Purge. On Mustafar, Darth Vader killed the Separatist Council and deactivated the droid armies, bringing the CIS to an end. Palpatine then declared himself Emperor of the galaxy, and reorganized the Republic into the Galactic Empire.

"The time is now for the Galaxy to learn of the Sith."
Supreme Commander Minious

The Outer Rim Sieges were the series of fierce battles that took place throughout the planets of the Galaxy's Rim territories, such as Lorta and Eriadu, which marked the emergence of the Kroprulan Sith Empire.

The sieges were planned by the Sith Council as a means to tax Outer Rim and some Exoansionary worlds. By invading, hammering the world hard, and leaving swiftly, they could successfully destroy a planet's economy with hardly any damage to their own craft.

The Sith Empire planned each battle carefully, with only one or two executed a year, to throw any defenders in the Outer Rim off-track. With a series of early sieges targeted at economically rich worlds, they immediately threw off defenders by violently attacking such worlds as Ventooine which was nothing more than a common spice and crystal exporter.

In the final months of the Sieges, High General Revenous organised a final invasion at Bespin to eliminate the Tibanna gas exportion which was suspected to be aiding the Jedi.

Behind the scenes

The Outer Rim Sieges were conceived by Alex, a member of Rebels and TDSL, as a means by which the Sith Empire revealed itself, but also a reason for his character Xander Vos to arrive at Bakura, where the Jedi Temple was located.
