Sarah in the dark oubliette

Hoggle's door

An oubliette is a dark pit, a dungeon with no doors. Its name is based on the French word for "to forget", because people left in the pit were supposed to be forgotten. The only obvious way in or out of an oubliette is through a hole in the ceiling, which is also the only source of light for any of its occupants.

In the film Labyrinth, Sarah finds herself trapped in an oubliette after falling through the Helping Hands. Hoggle helps her out, as he has access to a door that can be attached to the oubliette. This door can either lead an individual out of the oubliette, or into a broom closet.

Runescape

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

An Oubliette is a room designed to be built below the Throne Room (to work with the Throne Room traps) in a player-owned house. It can be built at level 65 Construction with 150,000 coins.

There are 6 hotspots available:

  • Floor - Attacks/injures anyone unfortunate enough to have fallen in the cage through the throne room or via a teleport trap from the dungeon.
  • Prison - Prevents escape from the trap, allowing more damage to be inflicted. Players must pick or force the lock. Note: If you remove your cage, you will lose the cage AND anything inside it.
  • Guard - Attacks any players during PvP (player-versus-player) or challenge mode.
  • Ladder - Allows access to the throne room if it is there.
  • Decoration - Ornamentation.
  • Lighting - Ornamentation.

An oubliette was a form of dungeon which was accessible only from a hatch in a high ceiling. To exit an oubliette was nearly impossible without outside help. The word comes from the French oublier, meaning "to forget", as it was used for those prisoners the captors wished to forget about. Most prisoners were left to die of starvation, although in a few cases an oubliette was known to have a large spike in the centre of the floor, which would result in more immediate death for those prisoners who were impaled by it.

Contents

Floor

The centre floor that players dropping from a Throne Room above fall onto. One of the traps players can add is called a "Rocnar", which when spelt backwards becomes "rancor". This was a monster from Star Wars episode 6, which tried to kill the protagonist Luke Skywalker.

Prison

To hold players dropping from a throne room above. Players have to pick the lock (using Thieving) of the gate, or force the lock (using Strength) of the gate, to get out.

Starwars

Up to date as of February 04, 2010

From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.

Oubliette was a shadowport hidden in the northern rim of Old Soren on the planet Ord Vaxal. It was owned and maintained by the Besadii kajidic of Hutts who were represented on the planet by Sassallo the Hutt.

Most of the shadowport remained underground with the few above ground areas designed to blend in with the ruins of Old Soren. Oubliette was used as a staging ground for operations in and around Tof Soren with the purpose of capturing slaves. Oubliette was also sometimes used as a hiding place for 'hot' items and individuals.
