There have been two different releases of the Original Soundtracks of Final Fantasy III, corresponding to the original release of the game and to the release of the DS version of Final Fantasy III.

The music of Final Fantasy III was Nobuo Uematsu's twenty-first collaboration to the video game industry and was well received by critics, that hail it as one of the best NES soundtracks.

Final Fantasy III: Original Sound Version is the complete soundtrack of the original NES version of Final Fantasy III. It was actually not the first compilation album of the game, having been released a year after the arranged album Final Fantasy III: Eternal Legend of the Wind had been released.

The NES version of Final Fantasy III never made it to Western shores, and therefore it was not until the DS Version of the game that the soundtrack was widely distributed in America and the rest of the world.

Final Fantasy III: Original Soundtrack is the complete soundtrack of the Nintendo DS version of Final Fantasy III. Also included in this album is a DVD containing the opening FMV sequence of the game, a promotion video made for the game, and an interview with the game's staff.

Final Fantasy III: Original Soundtrack received a lukewarm and occasionally good reviews from critics.
