There is more information available on this subject at Opal on the English-language Wikipedia.

Opals are amorphous SiO2·nH2O, hydrated silicon dioxide. The water content is usually between three and ten percent, but can be as high as 20%. Opals range from clear through white, gray, red, orange, yellow, green, shore, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown, and black. Of these hues, the reds against black are the most rare and dear, whereas white and greens are the most common; these are a function of growth size into the red and infrared wavelengths—like precious opal. Common opal is truly amorphous, but precious opal does have a structural element. The word opal comes from the Latin opalus, by Greek opallios, and is from the same root as Sanskrit upálá[s] for "stone", originally a millstone with upárá[s] for slab.

Opal is a mineraloid gel which is deposited at relatively low temperature and may occur in the fissures of almost any kind of rock, being most commonly found with limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, and basalt.

Opal is one of the mineraloids that can form or replace fossils. The resulting fossils, though not of any extra scientific interest, appeal to collectors.

Role

Trivia

  • Opals were coveted by many early civilizations including the Ancient Egyptians.
  • Many Opals look almost artificial, like a mosaic.

Opal was a DHARMA Initiative nurse who assigned incoming Initiative personnel to their jobs during registration on the Island. In "The Man Behind the Curtain" she gave Roger Linus the task of being a "Work Man". She was presumably killed along with all other members of the DHARMA Initiative in the Purge.

A detailed view of an opal

An Opal is a type of semi-precious gem in RuneScape. They can either be gained using the Mining skill from Shilo Village's gem rocks or a random gem rock during the Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup minigame, or from panning at the Digsite near the River Salve. They may also be stolen from H.A.M members using Thieving. Trading with another player is also an option.

Cut opals may be sold to Gabooty's Tai Bwo Wannai Cooperative in Tai Bwo Wannai Village for 60 trading sticks, while uncut may be sold for 12. During the Digsite Quest, the girl asks for an uncut opal in turn for some of the answers.

Opals are not used in the creation of jewellery, but can be cut with a chisel, which grants the player 15 Crafting experience. However, there is a chance that the player will accidentally crush the opal into a crushed gem. In this case, they will receive only 3.8 Crafting experience. Using the chisel on the opal after they are cut will make 12 opal bolt tips and gives the player 2 fletching xp.
