Final Fantasy XIII Character
"I've got a few screws loose. But I'm a l'Cie, same as you."
—Fang to Lightning
"Fang is a mysterious woman who is working with the Sanctum military despite bearing the mark of the detested l'Cie. She has a strong-minded personality and is unconcerned with trivialities."
—Online Description

Oerba Yun Fang is a playable character from Final Fantasy XIII. She is described as a strong woman with many mysteries surrounding her. She has black hair and she wears clothing that closely resembles the traditional Indian Sari, adorned with tribal accessories. She has the mark of a l'Cie on one arm and a large tattoo on the other.

Character designer Tetsuya Nomura stated that when compared to other characters personality-wise, Fang is stronger than Lightning and more stubborn than Snow Villiers. During the development, most of Lightning's sex appeal was transferred to Fang to make Lightning a more serious character. As a result, Fang is very flirtatious.

Her clothing is very traditional, especially when compared to some of the other clothes worn by characters in the game. Oerba Dia Vanille wears a similar style, and this combined with a similar name, suggest that they are from the same tribe in Pulse.

Story

Fang against the party.

Fang is a resident of Pulse, along with Oerba Dia Vanille, and a l'Cie like the rest of the main cast. Centuries before the events of the game, during the Great War between Pulse and Cocoon, Fang and Vanille both lost their families at the hands of Cocoon's l'Cie and fal'Cie and became close friends after meeting at Oerba's orphanage. Fang developed a deep grudge against Anima for failing to protect the people of Pulse and became a l'Cie to protect Pulse and Vanille, the latter becoming an l'Cie as well. As a result, Fang and Vanille both hold the power to summon Ragnarok to fulfill the Focus of destroying everything. But as Vanille was fearful of the power bestowed to them, Fang became Ragnarok all by herself to protect her. Though unable to destroy Cocoon as intended, Fang and Vanille were crystalized. Five-hundred years later, after Galenth brought her and Vanille to Cocoon, Fang revived with no memory of the events dealing with Ragnarok. Eventually, Fang manages to have Vanille escape while she fought off their pursuers. Soon after, Fang meets Sanctum official Cid Raines who shows sympathy to her cause and offers to help her in finding Vanille.

Fang meets Snow Villiers in Lake Bilge after his battle with the Shiva Sisters and brings him aboard the Lindblum to meet Cid Raines. After helping him rescue Lightning and Hope in Palumpolum, Fang joins the party and goes off with Lightning. She talks to Lightning when she asks her who she is. Fang also explains to her how a l'Cie turns into a Cie'th. At some point within the Fifth Ark, she appears ready to fight the party and claims that she does not care if Cocoon is destroyed because it is better than seeing her friends turn into Cie'th. However, her l'Cie mark begins to glow and summons Bahamut, which Fang has to fight (with help from Lightning and Vanille).

Fang as Ragnarok
Knowing Vanille wanted to never invoke Ragnarok again when Orphan demanded it, Fang decides to assume the form again and attempts to kill Orphan in a suicide attack. Fang's transformation turns out to be a failure and her l'Cie mark fades. As a way of forcing Vanille into becoming Ragnarok, Fang is subjected to torture by Orphan in an agonizing cycle of being killed painfully and then revived as Vanille has to see her best friend suffer before her eyes. Right as Vanille is about to accept her destiny of destroying the world, the rest of the party, now humans again, manage to save Fang and prevent Vanille from becoming Ragnarok. After Orphan's destruction, only Fang and Vanille are left in a crystallized state after saving Cocoon from crashing into Pulse by successfully summoning Ragnarok together.

Trivia

  • Before the script was completed, Fang was written as a male character. This was very early in development, as she is depicted on the game's logo which is one of the first artwork that was released for the game.
  • Fang's weapon turns into a three-section staff, and is known in some regions as a "coiling dragon staff", reflecting her control of Bahamut.
  • Fang's full-ATB skill, Highwind, is a powerful Jump attack. The name is a reference to the Dragoons of earlier installments who bear the last name Highwind.
  • Fang's crystal has taken the shape of a fang.
  • Unlike the other main characters in the game whose marks are black, Fang's l'Cie mark is white.
