Javier Sonara was born on February 15th, 1986 in Monterrey, Mexico. His mother was a widow who died while giving birth to him, so his only remaining relative was Mercedes, his older sister by 4 years. They grew up together partly in a rundown orphanage, partly in the streets wherever they could find shelter. The lack of love and attachment that most children receive turned them cold from an early age, Javier especially. The closeness that was forced upon the siblings ultimately drove them apart. Mercedes tried to mix with people and live as normal a life as possible, while Javier was dragged into criminal gangs. In his early teenage years he became sick of chanelling his anger through aggression and looked for another way to do it. When he discovered wrestling, he realised that not only did it allow him to do this, but that it would give him something meaningful to do with his life. His first goal was to train his body by working out in the gym whenever he had the chance. At the age of 16, a scout working for a Mexican wrestling company spotted him, admired his ambition and decided to teach him to wrestle.
After learning the traditional Mexican lucha libre style of wrestling, he worked his first match in an unknown underground company. It was a singles match against a respected veteran who insisted beforehand that Sonara should lose to him. Without a proper upbringing, Sonara had never learned "respect", and this seemingly arrogant instruction angered him. He applied maximum effort and concentration to the match, and pushed the veteran a lot further than he was supposed to. While shocked at first, the veteran liked his style and saw a bright future for him. In the heat of the battle he decided to put Sonara over, and let him win. This got the attention of numerous companies such as the AAA and WWA, but in the end he was eventually signed to the International Wrestling Revolution Group. Although he wore a mask in his debut match, he protested against this in the IWRG and blatantly refused to work for them unless he could wrestle unmasked, to which they had no objections. Without the astounding pressure and motivation he once had, his wrestling ability deteriorated and he lost most of his matches. His popularity floundered, and in the big picture he remained completely unknown. As well as wrestling for the IWRG, he worked for various other small Mexican companies. Throughout late 2003 and the majority of 2004 he started to pick things up again, and this resulted in his first championship match in the late summer of 2004: for the IWRG World Championship. However, before this match had been scheduled, Sonara had been offered the chance to join the Tough Enough Wrestling training camp in the United States. He was intrigued, and knew it would be foolish of him to turn this opportunity down. The one thing stopping him was his reluctancy to leave his sister behind, but Mercedes encouraged him to go. His championship match was his last match in Mexico. He defeated El Enterrador to win the title, but was stripped of it when the IWRG were informed of his plans to leave. He was never officially recognised as a world champion.
In early 2005 he travelled as far as he could across the continent towards New York City where TEW was situated, with the money he received from his sister and his Mexican wrestling friends. After flying to Denver, he roamed around central USA for a while, before finding settlement in Des Moines, Iowa. This is where he met his girlfriend and future on-screen manager Kate Black. She was 20 years old at the time, a year older than him, and she let him stay with her as he wouldn't have survived for long on his own. Like the Mexican scout who introduced him to professional wrestling, she was fascinated by his ambition and decided that she would follow and support him wherever he went in his wrestling career. Later that same year they finally reached New York where he began to train for TEW. In March 2006 he was promoted upwards to actually wrestle, under the moniker "Obscene". TEW was the place where he first met most of the wrestlers he would become familiar with later in his career, such as Chris Cage, Kurt Noble, Inferno, Tornado, Blade and Pat Doyle. He only wrestled one match in TEW before it shut down, but ironically this is where he made his biggest statement and solidified his reputation as a consistent heel. Backstage, Obscene irked Brad Ramsey, who in return challenged him to a tag team match. Obscene had to find a partner of his own, while Brad would team with JJ Storm who he was scheduled to fight at the upcoming pay-per-view for the TEW World Championship. Nobody was backing Obscene, the newcomer, to defeat the two no.1 contenders for the company's top title; but with Kate Black as his tag partner in what was essentially a handicap match, he managed to get the victory. In an unexpected twist, Kate was the one to score the pinfall. It was the ultimate embarrassment and the ultimate statement, but not the only mark Obscene would leave before the company folded. A petty rivalry between Obscene and Christian Kane escalated to a point where it was beyond ridiculous, and probably set the scene for extravagant "slasher-themed" storylines in the years to come. Christian's girlfriend Dani seduced Obscene (kayfabe of course) and led him to her hotel room, where Christian was planning an ambush. A wild brawl broke out which ended in Obscene being stabbed and then stuffed in a basement. Whether it was Christian or Dani that done the stabbing is unclear, but it was Dani who was arrested at the conclusion of this storyline.
The summer of 2006 saw the formation of a new Tennessee-based wrestling company, the Kingdom of Pride. It was owned by Jeremy Sterling, and Obscene was one of the founding members. He was immediately thrown into a revenge storyline with Christian Kane. Even though it went against the strict code of the company, the very first match on the first show was a hardcore grudge match between the two. Christian came out on top, setting a trend for the future: Obscene would never defeat Christian Kane one-on-one. Shortly after, a bloody, battered, disfigured Christian Kane was found unconscious backstage with the letters "O-B-S-C-E-N-E" carved into his back. Payback is a bitch... or at least that's what they all thought. During a qualifying match with "The Egyptian Dream" Kareem for KoP's top prize, the Valiant Championship, Christian Kane interfered and together with Obscene, assaulted Kareem viciously. For reasons unknown, Obscene still managed to qualify for the four-way elimination match at the first PPV "Redemption"; with the Valiant Championship on the line. The main story however, was that the unlikely alliance between Christian and Obscene amounted in a Scramble (Tag Team) Championship match on the same night, against defending champions Kurt Noble (who also had two matches that night) and Chris Cage. Obscene and Christian won the match - thus giving Obscene his first real taste of gold. His luck ran out before the main event, and Blade became the first Valiant Champion. Over the next month, Obscene and Christian made a few successful defenses before Obscene was betrayed by Christian during a title defense, and Christian's half-brother Bonesnap took over as champion. Obscene and Kate left the company to pursue other interests, and wouldn't return until 2007.
Obscene made a triumphant return to Pride in August 2007, by competing in a gauntlet match as the first entrant and lasting until the end to qualify for Elimination Revolution - a match that would take place at the "Revolution" PPV. It was also around this time that Obscene and Kate's troubles would begin, although they would be kept within a storyline for the time-being. The Elimination Revolution would begin as a three-on-three match, and the winners would advance to the second half of the match, where the winner would earn a shot at the Valiant Championship and the runner-up would earn a shot at the Syndicate Championship. Obscene teamed with Pat Doyle and Chris Cage and would defeat Christian Cage, Seraph and Smart Mark. He would only finish 3rd in the second half - which was still one of his biggest achievements to date.
September was a somewhat whirlwind month for him. He broke up and got back together with Kate (still in storyline), and won the Valiant Championship at the end of the month. There was no championship match even scheduled to take place, but after Obscene's character reached its peak of popularity with the fans, the management decided to cash in on this by giving him the main title. After the pre-scheduled main event ended in a no contest, a melee involving every member of the roster ensued, where the winner would take the Valiant Title. Pat Doyle also had a case for winning the match, but was screwed by owner Jeremy Sterling. Doyle won a no.1 contender Battle Royal the following week, then defeated Obscene in an untelevised match for the Valiant Championship the week after. Pride was already set to shut down before the event begun. Kate Black hasn't been seen by his side since.
Jeremy Sterling's next project was the founding of a new company in Japan, which Obscene eagerly joined. It only lasted a month before shutting down once again. Obscene qualified for the Samurai Championship match at the first PPV; in a Phenomenal Death Trap match with The Phenomenal Blu, Matt Mathews and Blade as his opponents. Blu won the match, and still proudly carries the title belt to this day.
It was only a mere few weeks before another major company surfaced, this time in Florida under the control of Robert Banks and Kurt Noble. For the third consecutive time, Obscene qualified to compete for the main title at the main event of the first PPV, titled "Independence From Imagination". This time, he was up against Rick X of The Outcast, and Blood Pump who had been feuding with Obscene over the previous couple of weeks. It was a 60 minute Iron Man match, and Obscene won his second official singles title: the QWL Paramount Championship. He was never recognised as the top dog of the company because The Phenomenal Blu was still wearing his world title from Sword, and also brought the old Slamtime Wrestling Coalition World Championship into the equation - during his rivalry with Tim Harrison. The plan was to unify these titles at the second PPV, "Conflagrations Of The Ring", but the QWL soon folded. The Phenomenal Blu bought the company and renamed it the Phenomenal Wrestling Organization, stripping Obscene of the Paramount Championship in the process. Obscene and Blade ignited a bitter rivalry, and had one match which was thrown out. Just like the PWO was created out of the blue (no pun intended), it disappeared in an equally short space of time.
After being neglected in the PWO (in his words), and low demand from the companies on his shortlist resulted in laughable contract offers; he considered laying low for a while. However, the tempation to return to the ring was too great. Obscene signed with the Universal Wrestling League on August 31, 2008. His first match saw him lose to Ares Guerrero. He assaulted Ares after the match, which begun a bitter two-month feud between the two. It was at this point, in early September, than Obscene began to develop a brand new gimmick. He claimed that the UWL was held captive by a demon that was destroying the freedom of the individual in favour of faction wars. It was his duty to eradicate this "virus" or "cancer" (as Obscene put it interchangeably). This really kicked off when Johnny Slayer/Parker didn't turn up for a match with Obscene, and he instead took out his frustrations on a UWL student - putting him over with the fans as a heel. He defeated Ares Guerrero later that month in his first supercard appearance, at "Pure Aggression", in a two out of three falls match.
Throughout late September and most of October, Obscene lost twice to Jerry McLean; beat Blood Pump and Nick Pickles in a strange bedfellows match with Ares Guerrero; and defeated Ares Guerrero in two more supercards. Their final match at "Southern Comfort" was a Hell on Earth match that Obscene invented himself. Many people hailed this as the match of the night. His next match on October 30 was with Kurt Noble, which he lost; but he came back with a victory over Mark Faith and Nick Pickles, teaming once again with Ares Guerrero. It's been acknowledged that their feud is over, and they've both stated that they respect how they'd taken each other to the limit. Obscene went on to defeat Delikado at the Three Year Celebration. This was his last match in UWL as it immediately went on what was intended to be a two month-long hiatus after this event. In typical Obscene-like fashion, he hastily quit the UWL altogether as he was too impatient to wait. Since then and up until the present day, he is in a relatively indifferent phase: wrestling in various small-time feds without any big ambitions.
In addition to the curse of the collapsing companies, there have been other factors holding Obscene back from his true potential. It can be argued that winning the Valiant Championship was only a ripple caused by the rivalry of Pat Doyle and Jeremy Sterling; and the QWL Paramount Championship could never be held in high regard with numerous world championships in the same company. In an interview in July 2008, Obscene vowed that one day he will finally cement himself as the undisputed best of any given company, and won't share that spot with anybody else.
Obscene is naturally cold-hearted as is his character, though he can lighten up in the present more than he used to. He has a very small number of friends, none of which are wrestlers. Although he has been paired up with various wrestlers during storylines, he tries to keep to himself as much as possible - even making it clear to management it would be a mistake to have him as anything other than a singles competitor.
Kate Black's disappearance after Pride can be attributed to their real-life breakup. They no longer remain in contact. The reason why is unclear as their relationship is a very touchy subject during both kayfabe and genuine interviews. He's still billed from Kate's hometown of Des Moines, but in reality he just lives wherever he works. His contact with his sister and Mexican friends is ongoing yet sporadic.
