Obal was a Binderian security officer onboard the USS Stargazer, under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the year 2333.

Stargazer chief of security, Peter "Pug" Joseph, who felt that Binderian anatomy looked like that of a plucked beakless chicken, suggested that Obal would be happier in a different department, but Obal was resolute in his resolve to be a security officer.

Obal was subjected to bullying and cruel remarks about his anatomy from Ensign Joseph Caber, but Obal did not respond in kind for the sake of decorum.

Obal even refused to fight back when Caber attacked him in the Stargazer's gymnasium. When Caber knocked out Obal's friend, Ensign Andreas Nikolas, who had come to Obal's aid, Obal finally struck out at Caber, easily rendering him unconscious. (STA novel: "Gauntlet")
