Nova Dragon is a boss from Final Fantasy IX. It is fought in Memoria, accessed from the Iifa Tree. The Nova Dragon is fought before you reach Memoria properly. The Nova Dragon has several attacks. It has Twister, like all wind based bosses. It also has Aerial Slash, inflicting heavy Wind elemental damage to the party, Shockwave, which damages the whole party, as Tidal Wave, which inflicts heavy Water elemental damage to the party. Nova Dragon also counterattacks when struck with a physical attack.
As revealed in Dissida, Nova Dragon is actually an incarnation of Shinryu, the name change likely because Nova Dragon is a storyline boss, Shinryu always appearing as one of, if not the strongest optional superbosses in its respective game.
Strategy
Nova Dragon is vulnerable to Sleep. Equip all your characters with the Insomniac ability and use Night with Quina. If you input your attack commands and Night before Nova Dragon wakes up again, then it will be put back to sleep before it can act. It is possible to beat it with a LV 1 party without it ever getting a turn. Following the Dragon's defeat the party gains access to Memoria.
