From Final Fantasy Wiki
North Corel is a town at the foot of Mt. Corel in Final Fantasy VII. It was built by the survivors of Corel, which was destroyed by Shinra. Since it is a relatively new settlement, the town is just a collection of crude dwellings, with little of the advanced technology that makes up human civilization on the Planet. It serves mostly as a stepping ground for the resort of Gold Saucer.

Passing Through
Cloud Strife and his party passes through North Corel on their world-wide hunt for the elusive Sephiroth. One member of the party, Barret Wallace was once a resident of Old Corel. However, the surviving townspeople blame him for the destruction of their town. Barret refuses to argue with them, and the party continues on to Gold Saucer.
Runaway Train
Later when Meteor is summoned by Sephiroth, and Cloud is lost in the Lifestream, Cid Highwind takes up the reins of acting leader to fight Shinra. Shinra's plan is to use the Huge Materia to destroy Meteor and save the Planet. The party will not allow this to happen.
There is a Huge Materia located in the burned-out Reactor on Mount Corel. The party heads to grab it before Shinra can, but the Materia is taken on a train before they get there. The party jumps on a small pump-cart and races to catch up with the train (the player must press
repeatedly). Then they fight their way through the Shinra forces to take control of the train. To get the train to stop, the player must press Up and
, then Down and
in a repeating pattern until the train stops. If they fail, the runaway train destroys North Corel and the Huge Materia is lost. If they succeed, North Corel is saved and the townsfolk recognize Barret as a hero, and no longer blame him for the loss of Old Corel.
Items Found
- Huge Materia - Only gotten if the train is stopped.
- Ultima Materia - Given by a little boy free if the train is stopped, if not it costs 50,000 Gil. It is also possible to completely miss this materia if the player does not catch up to the train in the beginning as well.
- Catastrophe - Given by a woman after the Huge Materia event, regardless of the success or failure of stopping the train. It is Barret's Level 4 Limit Break.
- Ether - Inside the rightmost tent. Must go through the people in this tent, then check the back part of the upper-right corner of the room (it is not in a treasure chest).
