Nightmare may refer to:
Nightmares are foul shadowy, non-corporeal creatures that come in different varieties through out the game. They resemble a humanoid figure (that walks on its hands and feet) with a long tail and wide demonic glowing eyes. The one common attribute of all Nightmares is that they are usually hidden and sprout from nowhere to strike at a party.
The higher level Nightmares use Monk or Necromancer melee builds which use holy damage or shadow damage to inflict great harm to a party that is not prepared for them. They are deadly to a party with spell-casters grouped close to each other and not very mobile. It is best if a party spaces itself when fighting them.
Because Nightmares are non-corporeal beings, they are not "fleshy creatures", which makes them immune to Bleeding and against several Necromancer skills targeting flesh, for example Rotting Flesh. Also, they do not leave behind a corpse that can be exploited by a Necromancer.
The Nightmares featured in the Factions campaign, at least, are servants of Kanaxai.
The Azure Shadows of Tyria, however, serve Grenth, as mentioned on Wintersday.
For a list of all types of Nightmares including bosses and quest-specific nightmares, see Category:Nightmares.

Nightmare is a very unstable man. Nightmare is the most common form of his rapidly changing personality. He's gone through many incarnations, from John Marcus (his birth name), to Nightmare, to ENEMY. He started life as a very unstable child. His parents seemed to be the picturesque couple, but the troubles caused by their strange child caused rifts in the relationship, leading the father to drink heavily. Early in life, he avoided convictions of many violent crimes, including murder, based on his unstable mental condition. He went from mental hospital to mental hospital for a few years, before finally being released to his parents at the age of 17. He met and befriended a girl named Jesse. The two became romantically linked, and John became more prevalent as the days went by, but a botched robbery, leading to Jesse's death, would throw John into full-blown Nightmare mode. He went from place to place, committing whatever crime he could in an attempt to "get back at the world" for the death of Jesse. He finally stumbled into R4GE, where he had a strong beginning, followed by a fourty-five day Television Championship reign. He feuded with Max Hatred before his reign, and won the belt off of Dean Jaggs due to an interference from Kokane (the two were feuding at the time). Nightmare would later go on to pin Jaggs for his first title defense the following week. Nightmare lost the title at Lights Out to the seven-foot tall monster Colossus. Nightmare had his biggest match against Ken Fuqua for the R4GE World Heavyweight Championship, which he lost. Shortly after, he left R4GE for a few months, coming back as the lurker 'ENEMY'. He would re-debut as John Marcus and take the R4GE Television Championship from Logan Gable, by way of a Dean Jaggs interference. This would lead to a best of three series for the title, the final match being decided at Breaking Point, which Gable won. Nightmare has since gone through a strange transition. What character will this turn out to be? How permanent? None of this is known at the time.
