Hawk entered Starfleet Academy as soon as he was old enough, and excelled academically, leading his instructors to believe he had an eidetic (photographic) memory. He was also recognized for his athletic and interpersonal skills. (TNG novel: Rogue)
One of his close friends at the Academy was Linda Addison, with whom he shared an interest in rock climbing and 19th century American literature, and with whom he also shared a common taste in men. After graduation, both maintained regular occasional contact. (TNG eBook: Slings and Arrows: A Sea of Troubles)
Hawk also attended advanced training flight school at Jupiter Station, and finished first in his class. One of his classmates was Dan Duvall. (TNG eBook: Slings and Arrows: A Sea of Troubles)
As a cadet, Hawk was in a year-long romantic relationship with a fellow cadet named Logan. (TNG novel: Rogue)
His first assignment was as conn officer on the USS Yorktown under Captain Kentrav. (TNG novel: Rogue) He then transfered to Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, where he worked on the construction of the Sovereign-class starship which would become the USS Enterprise-E. (TNG eBook: Slings and Arrows: A Sea of Troubles)
While on shore leave on Risa in 2371, Hawk met Lieutenant Commander Ranul Keru. They began a romantic relationship, and when the Enterprise-E launched in 2372, both joined the crew together. (TNG novel: Section 31: Rogue)
Early in his career, he distinguished himself with his display of superior reflexes, and as of stardate 50368.0, he had earned twenty-three separate commendations from his superiors. Hawk's talents brought him to the attention of Section 31, who tried to recruit him as an agent during the Enterprise's mission to Chiaros IV. Despite the persuasive efforts of Ambassador Aubin Tabor and Commander Cortin Zweller, Hawk declined, and instead revealed their efforts to Captain Picard.
In 2373, during an attempted Borg takeover of the Enterprise, Hawk was attacked during an EVA maneuver by a Borg Drone and injected with nanoprobes. Under control of the collective, with the designation 1701-E 587M, Hawk was shot by Lieutenant Commander Worf, which threw Hawk's body into space. Hawk was later incinerated upon descent into Earth's atmosphere. (TNG movie: Star Trek: First Contact; TNG short story: "A Private Victory")
In the six years' aftermath of his death, partner Ranul Keru still had not fully accepted it. Hawk returned to him in the form of dreams to comfort his coping loved one. (TTN novel: Taking Wing)
