The military in GTA games are the armed forces of the USA, comprising mostly of the Army, but also with air and naval bases. The army themselves don't appear in Grand Theft Auto IV, because it enhances realism - the army would not be sent to kill one person, and also because the army do not generally operate within large cities. The army is replaced somewhat by NOOSE. The military is also important in many missions throughout the series, such as Sir, Yes Sir!, Black Project, Green Goo, Up, Up and Away!, Vertical Bird and Over the Top.




Grand Theft Auto II

In Grand Theft Auto II, the military will chase trh ===Grand Theft Auto III era===After the player gains six stars in a GTA III Era game, the army will begin to chase the player. On the ground, two military vehicles are used to kill the player; the Barracks OL, which is used for troop transport, and the Rhino tank. The soldiers themselves are always well armed with weapons that will often make short work of the player and most vehicles.

Members of the military behave as a gang in Vice City and will attack the player if spotted on military territory, unless in a Cop uniform. They will also set up roadblocks comprised of the Barracks OL with soldiers armed with M16's in GTA III, M4's (in Fort Baxter Air Base) and MP5's (during a 6-star wanted level), and M4 Carbines in every other GTA III Era game. These aren't as lethal as those of the FBI since there could be two FBI vehicles taking up one road with at least eight agents. But seeing as how the Barracks takes up the space of one road they can be broken through although the MP5s still pose a threat, especially since the Army is very well trained, more than the FBI.

A strange thing is that soldiers in the Fort Baxter Air Base never participate in law enforcement activity; if the player is wearing a police uniform or army fatigues and enters the base with a wanted level; only the law enforcement officers that enter from outside will try killing the player.

  • In GTA Vice City, the soldiers at the Fort Baxter Air Base are considered to be part of the Streetwannabe's gang.
  • Even though you are chased by Rhino's at six stars, they will not fire at you because they are not programmed to fire its main gun.
  • The Vice City National Guard soldiers strangely seem to wear fatigues similar to the present day German Army fatigues.

The UNSC Navy is the branch of the United Nations Space Command Defense Force responsible for naval operations in space. Its roles include ship-to-ship combat, orbital bombardment, the deployment of atmospheric and space fighters, and the delivery of UNSC Marines into combat.



The UNSC Navy was created in the wake of the Interplanetary War of the 2160's - precisely during the Argyre Planitia Campaign of 2163, as a result of the UN's need to oversee and monitor Marine deployments from space, thus forming the United Nations Space Command. The UNSC Navy is a direct descendant of the UN Navy. It is led by the UNSC Naval Command.

The UNSC has a large fleet of warships, along with many Longsword fighters, though many valuable assets of the UNSC Navy were destroyed during the Battle of Reach and a very large portion of its ships were lost when Truth occupied Earth; the only combat-capable warships seen were the three UNSC Frigates and UNSC Longsword. UNSC ship production is handled by the Reyes-McLees Martian Shipyards (but that may no longer be true due to the Covenant presence in the Sol System), and numerous other shipyards.

UNSC Navy personnel are given training in self-defense. All crewmen are trained to use the M6D Pistol.[1]

The primary offensive armament of UNSC spacecraft is the Magnetic Accelerator Cannon (MAC). These are high velocity coil guns that are used to accelerate projectiles ranging in mass from 600 metric tons in the case of smaller warships, and 3,000 tons in the case of Super MAC platforms. These projectiles are composed of Titanium-A, depleted Uranium, and/or Tungsten with a ferrous (iron) core. Super MAC platforms accelerate MAC rounds to over 40% of the speed of light or about 267,840,000 miles per hour with twenty-three linear accelerator coils, while ship-based MACs have a lower velocity.

The UNSC Frigate Gettysburg is quoted as firing a 600 ton shell at 30 kilometers per second. Before Reach fell, the Pillar of Autumn was equipped with a modified MAC that could quickly fire three lighter projectiles in succession instead of just one heavier projectile. It was originally intended to allow the Pillar of Autumn a better chance of disabling a Covenant ship, which was a feature required for a mission that was later scrubbed following the Battle of Reach.

Almost all UNSC warships are equipped with Archer Missile pods for ship-to-ship engagements, which prove most effective against unshielded targets. A common tactic among UNSC ships is to disable the target's shields with MAC rounds and then pummel it with Archer missiles. UNSC ships in 2525 carried Fusion Missiles as an offensive weapon. They seem to have been removed or replaced in later years. UNSC ships may also carry "Shiva" nuclear warheads. In addition, the UNSC mounts 50mm auto-cannons on its ships for defense against enemy fighters and boarding craft, controlled by shipboard AIs.

UNSC warships also carry significant Marine detachments for internal security, boarding actions, and planetary assault, and carry all the equipment and materiel needed by Marine forces. It is implied that a significant portion of the interior of UNSC warships are devoted to this purpose, as there are armories and barracks that hold these supplies.

Ships of the UNSC navy also carry a number of C-709 Longsword Interceptors. These are armed with 110mm Rotary Cannons and ASGM-10 Missiles, and sometimes a Moray Space Mine system or even a single Shiva-class Nuclear Missile. They can also be remotely-operated and used to carry a remotely-detonated Shiva missile, which, when detonated, effectively destroys both the Longsword and its selected target.

Despite all of this firepower, however, UNSC warships have great difficulty defeating Covenant ships even with a numerical advantage. It typically takes multiple hits from a ship-based MAC weapon to disable a Covenant ship's shields, although larger, ODP-based Super MACs can fire a round that can literally shatter Covenant capital ships.[2] Archer Missiles must be used in tremendous amounts to breach Covenant shield systems. Even with their shields down, Covenant ships have been noted to remain operational after multiple direct hits from normal MAC rounds. This advantage in firepower and shielding gives the Covenant an effective 3:1 ratio and better against UNSC ships.

  • Many UNSC Navy traditions currently in use were also UN Navy traditions. Preceding the UN Navy, they were various Earth Navy traditions.
  • This seems to have been a palpable reference to the United States Navy, save that the ships were used in sea-only combat whilst the UNSC Navy serves in space-only combat.
  • Naval personnel are sometimes referred to as "swabbies". The term "swabbie" can be a joke[3] or a sign of disrespect.[4]

A Navy was a military unit composed of various vessels and was commonly known as a Starfleet or a Defense Fleet. Though several worlds and civilizations used the word "Navy" as traditionally associated with a fleet of sea vessels, the majority of the the galaxy primarily used it to define a fleet of starships.

Some spaceships were shaped like ancient traditional maritime vessels, such as the Fairwind, though this was rare.


Space Navies

Numerous worlds built space navies for their own defense as well as for use by Galactic governments in times of peril. Prominent civilizations that were known for their contributions to the advancement of starfleets were Mon Calamari and Kuat.

A Naval task force would normally include:

  • Flagship – This ship was the formal head of a naval task force, and usually the seat of power for the senior officer in command of the fleet. This is usually the most powerful ship in the fleet it commands. Ex. Eclipse being the reborn Palpatine's flagship.
  • Capital Ships – The designation of "capital ship" referred to the size of a vessel. Capital ships measure 100m or longer. There is no upper limit on capital ship size. Ex; a Corellian Gunship measured a mere 120m and was considered a capital ship, while an Executor-class Star Dreadnought measured 19,000m and was also classified as a capital ship.
  • Support Ships – These vessels were usually smaller capital ships such as frigates and light cruisers used to compensate for tactical weaknesses in the larger vessels (Ex: the Lancer-class frigate was covered in anti-starfighter weaponry to protect larger warships with little anti-fighter capabilities) and/or to augment the firepower of larger vessels (Ex: in the Imperial Navy, two Strike-class cruisers were considered the equivalent of one Victory-class Star Destroyer and were used as such). These ships also encompassed other support roles such as medical vessels (Ex: The Rebel Alliance Fleet's primary medical frigate during the Galactic Civil War was a EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate called the Redemption).
  • Transports – These were used primarily as cargo or personnel carriers (Ex: The Bulk transport saw heavy use with the Rebel Alliance Fleet as a troop transport during the Galactic Civil War).
  • Starfighters – Fighters were small one- or two-man (sometimes three as in the case of the ARC-170) vessels used for the protection of the fleet, reconnaissance, and anti capital ship actions.

Maritime Navies

Four major categories of most aquatic vessels are generally common among the galaxy:

  • The basic type of ships were used to transport people or objects between lands.
  • During wars, attack ships, called Destroyers, were invented in order to attack the transports and weaken the enemy's army.
  • The existence of the destroyer required the countermeasure of the Frigates that would protect transport convoys.
  • The next implementation were Cruisers that attacked ground units, followed by anti-aircraft vessels that protected the navy from aerial attacks.

The Gungans and the Selkath were among the most notable species to utilize a seaborne navy.

The usage of the word "navy" or other naval terms (ship, frigate, corvette, cruiser, fleet, admiral, captain etc) which were inherited to space or stellar technology is not uncommon in science fiction works, such as Star Trek. Note that squadron is a term used in real life both for navy and aeronautics.

According to the encyclopedia of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, space navy evolved from sea navy, although this evolution would have happened as early as 200,000 BBY.

An interstellar community operates under many unique restrictions - it consists of many island planets adrift in an ocean of space. Communication between the worlds absolutely depends on technology. Ships flying between the worlds are vulnerable to pirates and raiders; the worlds themselves are vulnerable to attacks from unfriendly governments. To control such an ocean of stars, society must depend on its starfaring Navy.

Most interstellar states (whether individual nations on a world, independent worlds, small groups of worlds, or vast interstellar empires) maintain navies. These navies are organized to provide the most possible protection for their territory. In large groups of worlds (such as the Third Imperium and most of its interstellar neighbors), the Navy is organized with a three-tiered structure: the major forces of the Navy are the fleets (which together comprise the Imperial Navy); the local provinces (subsectors) maintain reserve fleets; worlds of high enough technology maintain their own system squadrons. The fleets are composed of the latest and best in warship technology; reserve fleets are usually with second line, obsolescent (but not obsolete) ships handed down from the fleets; system squadrons, supported by the tax base of only one world, are suited only for defense of that world. The distinctions between these forces are primarily based on size, resources, and duties.
