The National League A is the highest level of ice hockey in Switzerland. A professional league, the NLA is one of the oldest running hockey league in the world, having begun its activities in 1909 under the name Swiss International Championship.

The league is made of 12 teams, facing each other in a regular season of 44 games, following which come playoffs time for the 8 highest ranked teams. Three rounds are played, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, each series being a best-of-seven. The bottom 4 teams at the end of the season meet in the playouts, the loser of which faces the winner of the National League B in the promotion/relegation round.
