Narendra III was a class M planet in the Narendra system, located near the Federation-Klingon border. The planet's land mass is divided into twelve continents. Horbin was the name given to the planet when it had been part of the Zalkat Union. (novel: The Brave and the Bold)

In 2152, Captain Jonathan Archer stood trial on Narendra III for plotting against the Klingon Empire. (ENT episode: "Judgment")

In 2344, Romulans launched a surprise attack on Narendra III, destroying the colony, as well as the USS Enterprise-C, which had responded to the distress call. This honorable sacrifice served to save the then-tenuous Federation-Klingon Alliance. (TNG episode: "Yesterday's Enterprise"; TLE novel: The Art of the Impossible")

In an alternate timeline, the Enterprise-C disappeared in the midst of this battle, and the deterioration of the Alliance continued until it collapsed. (TNG episode: "Yesterday's Enterprise")

The Narendra III colony was rebuilt between 2344 and 2376, by which point it had dozens of cities, and a population of thousands. (novel: The Brave and the Bold)

In 2353, the planet was the location of a conference that saw the Klingons and Federation sign the Treaty of Alliance. (ST roleplay module: All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook)

In 2376, the fourth Malkus Artifact was found on the planet, after having been hidden there 90,000 years before (when the planet had been known as "Horbin"). Its discovery unleashed the consciousness of the ancient dictator Malkus the Mighty, enabling him to control the minds of the colonists. (novel: The Brave and the Bold)

The novel The Brave and the Bold implies that the Klingons had not settled Narendra III as of 2266. This was apparently contradicted by the Enterprise episode "Judgment", although it is possible that the planet changed hands during the Federation-Klingon wars.

Further Information

Historical

Starfleet Captain Jonathan Archer faced trial on Narendra III in 2152. The Klingons charged him with conspiracy against the Klingon Empire, and he was found guilty, exiled to Rura Penthe. (ENT: "Judgment")

Four Romulan warbirds attacked the outpost in 2344, and the Starfleet starship USS Enterprise-C responded to the distress call. Unfortunately, both the ship and the outpost were lost, but the event led to a thawing in Federation-Klingon relations and even a peace treaty. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise")

In an alternate timeline, the Enterprise-C responded to the distress call but disappeared mid-way through the battle. Without the Enterprise-C there to put up a fight against the Romulans, demonstrating to the Klingon Empire that the Federation had honor, the Federation-Klingon conflict flared into a full-scale war.

In 2466, Narendra III was obliterated by the Piriss. Orad of the Piriss said he had the planet destroyed because he liked watching them explode. (Star Trek: G)

In the Mirror universe an incident at Narendra III triggered a twenty-year war between the Terran Empire and the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, which the Alliance won. (Mirror Universe: The Final Days)

Trivia

Narendra III was named after TNG writer and science consultant Naren Shankar, who is currently one of the the executive producer of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
