"Mythril is a strong, easily processed metal. Highly responsive to magic, it forms the basis of magical armaments."
—Bookshelf at Mysidia, Final Fantasy II

Mythril (ミスリル Misuriru) is a valuable metal found in the Final Fantasy series. It can be crafted into many pieces of equipment, like swords, armor and gauntlets. The name seems to be derived from a metal called Mithril, appearing in J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional universe, featured in "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". In fact, in Final Fantasy VI, it is called Mithril. It is a possibility that it is intended to be "Mithril" in English, but was changed to "Mythril" after Final Fantasy VI to lessen the chances of a copyright lawsuit from Christopher Tolkien, who is infamously very litigious.
