Mister Gutsy
affiliation: United States Armed Forces
location: Capital Wasteland
base id: 00021EBD

Mister Gutsy is a military robot model created by General Atomics International, and it is, functionally, a militarized version of the Type-II Mr. Handy, an earlier, civilian-model robot created by the same company for use in household duties. The Gutsy, unlike the Handy, is a dedicated combat robot, and is easily distinguished from the Handy by its army drab olive green paintjob, WWII-era US Army roundel insignia, and replacement of its British butler voice unit with an American drill sergeant voice . It was commissioned by the U.S. Army just before the Great War in 2077. They have distinctive, "soldierly" personalities, with an advanced AI somewhat similar to that of the civilian-model Mr. Handy. More likely than not due to the conflict with China that caused the Great War, Mr. Gutsies often scream anti-communist epithets, much like Liberty Prime.

A model of Mr. Gutsy is used by the Brotherhood Outcasts as well; this one has a red-and-black flecked paintjob and a Brotherhood Outcast emblem in place of the usual US military iconography.

Additionally, Talon Company controls several military Mr. Gutsies, which they use sparingly to guard some of their outposts inside the D.C. Ruins.

Mister Gutsies are among the most dangerous robots in the Capital Wasteland, short of only the Sentry Bot in terms of staying power. Gutsy models are armed with a plasma gun, roughly equivalent to a plasma pistol, for long-range combat and a flamethrower for close-range combat. This affords the Gutsy decent protection against both ranged and melee targets, a feature lacking in any other robot save the civilian Mister Handy. Additionally, due to their hover mechanism, Gutsies do not set off the proximity fuses on mines. To use one of these against a Gutsy, you will need to place one, wait for the Gutsy to get close enough, and then detonate the explosive manually by shooting it.

However, Gutsies do have several weaknesses: they can't use both weapons simultaneously and will always switch to their flamer when the target is in range, allowing the player character to effectively disable a Gutsy's attack capability by continuously reentering the robot's flamethrower range, forcing it to switch back and forth between the plasma gun and flamer. Explosions will also knock it out of the air temporarily, giving a window of opportunity to strike the bot down.

Gutsies, like any other robot, have a small variety of items they may drop on death.

Behind the scenes

  • The lines "Box me up and ship me home", "Pin my medals upon my chest..." and "...tell mom I did my best..." said by Mister Gutsy when dying, are a reference to a military running cadence. It was made famous in the movie "Full Metal Jacket". The cadence in its entirety is: "If I die in the combat zone, box me up and ship me home; pin my medals upon my chest, tell my momma (Or Chesty Puller) I did my best"
  • The line "There's nothing I like better than making some other poor bastard die for his country" is paraphrasing the opening line in the movie, Patton: "I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb bastard die for his country." (This quote was not only used in the movie but given in an actual speech by Patton during his WWII campaign.)
  • The "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!" quote references the Incredible Hulk. It's also rather funny, as Mr. Gutsy is painted green and has a far more aggressive personality than a Mr. Handy as appropriate.
  • The quote "You've just made my day" could be a reference to The "Dirty Harry" movies.
  • The line "Pain is just weakness leaving the body" is an inspirational slogan frequently used by the [1] and U.S. Army.
  • The quote "Every day is a good day to die!" is most likely a variant of the quote "Today is a good day to die!" spoken by Lt. Commander Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space 9. Incidentally, Michael Dorn, the actor who portrayed Worf in both series, voiced the character Frank Horrigan in Fallout 2. First used by the Sioux indians when riding into battle.
  • The quote "There's nothing better than the smell of fresh plasma in the morning."is a reference to the quote "I love the smell of napalm in the morning." from Apocalypse Now
  • "Do that again, and I'll stick my foot so far up your ass that you'll cough up boot polish!" is a quote from Red Forman of That 70's Show.
  • The "Kill'em all, and let God sort'em out" quote is adopted by the Marines and the Green Berets. It derives from "Neca eos omnes. Deus suos agnoset", or "Kill them all. God will know His own.". This was a misunderstood reference to 2 Tim. 2:19 which in part reads, "The Lord knoweth them that are his".

Mister Gutsy appears only in Fallout 3.

  • Mr. Gutsy's can float above water.
  • Any explosions, even non lethal ones, have a high chance of knocking a Mister Gutsy down. Therefore, grenades are the best way to deal with them.
  • Since Mister Gutsies hover above ground instead of actually touching it, they do not trigger mines set by the player or other party.
  • When left alone for a long enough time, Mr. Gutsy regenerates, capable of shooting at you after he's down. A sneak attack critical is best here.
