From Final Fantasy Wiki

Mithra is a race available for play in Final Fantasy XI. They are agile, cat-like humanoids. Mithra players are rewarded if they start in the city of Windurst, which is an adopted homeland, with a Windurst Ring. They are not particularly strong, brilliant, or charismatic, but they have outstanding Dexterity and Agility which help them hit more often and get hit less often. They are ideal for classes like Ranger, Ninja, and particularly Thief. Unfortunately, their skills get them labeled as a race of thieves and cheats, which is also reflected in character preference since nearly one in three Mithra players choose to level up Thief above all other Jobs. Mithra have otherwise fairly average statistics and can play almost any of the Jobs without great difficulty, with possible exception given to Beastmaster and Bard due to their low Charisma scores.

Players can only choose to be a female Mithra, should they want to play one. Players have been lead to believe that Mithra men are fairly rare and because of this, they are something of a commodity. Only the more numerous females go out to adventure. With the release of the expansion Wings of the Goddess there is now one male Mithra NPC, named Lehko Habhoka who takes part in the past Windurst storyline.

Notable Mithra include Nanaa Migho and Naja Salaheem.

Plot Details

In the game's creation myth, the goddess Altana weeps over the destruction of the ancient Zilart race. Her tears clean away the wreckage and give rise to the five enlightened races. The god Promathia, however, is disgusted by Altana's weakness and so curses the five races by bringing out their darkest emotions. The Mithras were cursed with envy.

Twenty years before the game is set, during the Crystal War, many Mithra volunteered to help fight the Beastmen hordes and were dispatched to their allied city The Federation of Windurst, home of the Tarutaru. However, despite the combined efforts of the Allied Forces, Windurst was leveled during the war. At the war's end, the Mithra played a key role in rebuilding the city and many have since taken up permanent residence there. Because of this long history together, the Mithra and Tarutaru share a close bond.

The Mithran homeland is said to be far south in Vana'diel and is not currently accessible by players. Players can, however, go to Kazham, a "Tropical Paradise" located on the Island of Elshimo, which is considered a second home of the Mithra. Outside of the stockades of Kazham lies a dense tropical rainforest which is infested with Goblins and Sahagin; many Mithra hone their hunting skills on these dangerous monsters.
