History

Bess Lynn worked as a nurse during the early years of the American Revolution. Inspired by her fellow compatriots and a sense of honor, she began wearing a mask and wig, and adorned herself in the colors of the American flag. Calling herself Miss Liberty, she heroically fought against European invaders, often alongside the frontiersman Tomahawk and his young compatriot, Dan Hunter.

In 1776, Miss Liberty rode into the middle of a squad of Hessians who had attempted to steal the Liberty Bell. They were pulling it across the side of a steep hill on ropes when Miss Liberty dispersed the soldiers by hurling powder horns in their direction. The explosion destroyed the ropes that were holding the bell aloft, and it came crashing down on top of her, crushing her to death.

At some point prior to her death, Miss Liberty was pulled from her own timeline by the futuristic villain known as the Lord of Time and brought to the year 3786. Along with four other time-displaced adventurers, these "Five Warriors from Forever" were manipulated into attacking the Eternity Brain – the renegade artificial intelligence that controlled the Lord of Time's Palace of Eternity. They attacked the Eternity Brain, but it defended itself by causing dinosaurs from the Mesozoic era to materialize before them. It also teleported evolved Lizard Men to the castle to handle the opponents one at a time. Before long the Five Warriors from Forever were captured and imprisoned inside of a dungeon. They were liberated thanks to the combined efforts of the Justice League of America and the Justice Society of America. After which, each of the displaced adventurers were sent back to their proper time eras. [1]

It is believed that Miss Liberty is an ancestor of the World War II heroine, Liberty Belle. In May of 1942, Libby experienced a series of intense dreams wherein she witnessed Miss Liberty's last heroic moments before being crushed by the Liberty Bell. [2]

Notes

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-Two era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985-86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
  • Although she was most often seen wearing a dark wig, Miss Liberty was actually a blond.

Miss Liberty

Overview

Alexis Cole, aka Miss Liberty (not to be confused with Ms. Liberty), is the daughter of Marcus Cole (Statesman) and Monica Richter (Maiden Justice). She is a Hero belonging to the Generic Heroes faction. (Her powers can be found in the Independents faction page)

Villains face her

Description

Named for one of the ancient Greek Furies which Statesman encountered and befriended on his journey to the Well of the Furies, Alexis grew up around some of the greatest heroes mankind has ever seen. It is no surprise that she grew up to be one herself. Inheriting the sacred girdle from her mother and the superhuman abilities of the gods from her father, Miss Liberty is a force for justice and equality across America.

Information

Miss Liberty inherited the Girdle of Hera from her mother and passed it down to her daughter Ms. Liberty, Stateman's sidekick and leader of the Vindicators, who now wears it as the Liberty Belt. She was also given the legendary sword Excalibur by Hero 1 before the Rikti Invasion, which she also passed down to her daughter.

Miss Liberty is the founder of Freedom Corps to facilitate communication and coordination between Paragon City's new heroes.

Quotes

During the first mission of the Mender Tesseract Strike Force:

Thanks to her, President Marchand will be able to escape you... this time.

Image:globalchat.png Miss Liberty:
We know you're close by, Character.
I'm waiting for you.
Think you can get Marchand? You're going to have to go through me.

President Marchand:

I'm on to you, hooligan!
Now, Miss Liberty, if you please. How does this thing work again?

Miss Liberty:

You just push the button, sir.

President Marchand:

Oh, thank you, dear. I knew that this newfangled technology always confuses me.
Better luck next time, hoodlum!!

Miss Liberty:

My pleasure, sir.

Once Marchand has escaped, you will have to face her:

At 75% Life: "You've barely scratched me! Whoever sent you should be fired!"
At 50% Life: "Okay, now I'm annoyed!"
At 25% Life: "You got me on a bad day!"
Defeated: "What? This can't be! I'm Miss Liberty!"
Defeats a villain: "You might want to consider a new career, Character. You sort of stink at this one."

Notes

  • Miss Liberty is the mother of Megan Duncan, the current Ms. Liberty, the hero trainer in Atlas Park. Because of the similarity of their names, there is often confusion between the two women.
  • In the novel Freedom Phalanx Miss Liberty's name is given as Alexis, after one of the Furies.
