Melzar's Maze: Misc

RuneScape uses the British convention for floor numbering: Ground floor, first floor (immediately above the ground floor), second floor, etc.
Location on World map
Crafting Guild
Crandor Melzar's Maze Port Sarim
Melzar's Maze is located north-west of Rimmington.

Melzar's Maze is a large, three-story building with a basement, and is located north-west of Rimmington. It is the home of Melzar the Mad, and the location of a map piece required for the Dragon Slayer quest. The bookshelves in the maze will reveal bits of information on Melzar's experiments and descent into madness.

Melzar's Maze requires six keys of different colours.

To enter the building, players must obtain the maze key from the guildmaster of the Champions' Guild during Dragon Slayer. Oziach used to give the key, but Jagex modified the quest. Once inside the building, players must go through mazes on each floor and in the basement. However, to proceed to the next floor, players must kill the creature that is holding the key to one of the many doors on the floor.

Only one door leads players to the next floor; the rest will send them back to the first floor. When a key is used with a door, it will disappear. Because of this, it is recommended that players carry two of each key, so that if they make a mistake, they can go back through the door, get another key, and go into the correct door.

There are bookcases within the maze which contain Melzar's notes, a book about Melzar's life that can be read.

Ground floor

Ground floor plan
The ground floor of Melzar's Maze.

The ground floor is where players enter the building. On this floor are red doors, level 3 zombie rats, and level 1 rats. There are also various decorations and spooky pictures to give the building an abandoned look. The north-east room contains an exit that will take players to the basement and then back outside on the building's east side.

One of the zombie rats hold a red key; the correct one spawns near the far right red door, and it is a small one. It is also the only small rats that has a long, curled tail, rather than a short stubby one. Players must keep killing them until they obtain it, but this usually takes less than a minute. When they have a red key, they must open the far right red door. They can then climb the ladder and go the next floor.

In June 2007, it was no longer possible to progress to the next floor if the quest was complete, as an update made the rat with the red key non-attackable. This update was reversed in July 2007, making it possible to use the area again.

First floor

First floor plan
The first floor of Melzar's Maze.

On the first floor, players will find level 19 ghosts, who were most likely victims of Elvarg. Players may talk to them if they wear an amulet of ghostspeak, obtained from the restless ghost quest.

Quotes include:

  • Someone help me! I'm trapped!
  • Oh no!
  • I don't want to die like this!
  • Mummy! Where are you?
  • Eeeek!
  • Mummy, are we safe now?
  • Get the women and children to the boats!
  • Oh my gods, the dragon is coming back!
  • Quickly, run!
  • Aaaah!
  • Children, run quickly!
  • On the horizon! Do you see it?
  • Put that fire out!
  • Come on you monster! Just finish me!
  • We're all doomed!
  • It's hopeless. We're all going to die!

The ghost with a tan shirt and a deep gray hood drops the orange key. When players have killed it, it will drop the orange key. When they have done so, they must then open the door from the ladder on the eastern wall, and go up the ladder in this room to enter the second floor. The bookcases contain Melzar's notes, which explain his progression into madness.

Second floor

Second floor plan
The second floor of Melzar's Maze.

On the second floor, players will have to fight level 22 skeletons. The skeleton with the yellow key is the only one with a round shield. When players have killed this skeleton and obtained the key, they must then open the south western yellow door and continue down the hallway to the ladder. They will then climb down various ladders until they end up in the basement, the toughest part of the maze.

Basement floor plan
The basement of Melzar's Maze.

As soon as a player lands in the basement, they will notice two level 24 zombies, a brown door, and a blue door. Unless you REALLY need food (which you probably want to fight the demon coming up) do NOT go through the brown door, as this is an exit and prevents you from going back through to fight the zombies. One you go through the door, you're outta luck and have to run down the hall to the ladder which leads to the outside of the maze. In short, you have to start all over. The blue door though,  leads to the next enemy in the maze, Melzar the Mad. Players must kill the zombies until they receive a blue key. The zombie carrying it is, again, random.

Behind the blue door is Melzar the Mad, a demented and slightly funny level 43 wizard. When players attack him, he will use melee as well as magic attacks. He will also sometimes make cabbages pop up nearby. In this room, the brown door leads to an exit; it is the magenta door that leads to the last opponent in Melzar's Maze. Once players have defeated Melzar, he will drop the magenta key.

Behind the magenta door is a powerful lesser demon, a huge level 82 foe. Players must be well prepared for this opponent, which brings up the topic of what weapon to use. If the player has high enough strength and attack levels, such as high 40's- low 50's, they should use a rune or corrupt dragon weapon. If players have slightly lower levels, like in the 30's, silverlight from the Demon Slayer Quest works as well as a rune longsword. The lesser demon's max hit is 8, so if player fall below 9 hitpoints they should heal to prevent death. The Protect from Melee prayer will give virtual immunity from the lesser demon's attacks. The lesser demon does not drop any loot besides the key.

Alternatively, a player can choose to use ranged or magic attacks instead. If they do, one can safe spot the demon by luring it to the corner of its chamber and standing by the door from Melzar. The demon is unable to follow you down this hall. If players need to escape, there is a brown escape door down the hallway they can use to get out of the building. Players may also choose to teleport out of the maze. When they have killed the demon, players can then open the green door with the green key the demon dropped and claim their map piece from the chest just outside the door. Once they have the map piece, they can then climb the ladder back to the ground floor and leave if they wish or stay in the maze to train.

Music tracks unlocked:

  • Malignius Mortifer will tell you that Melzar was driven mad by his use of necromancy, when a spell went awry. He also says that this affected his ability to raise the dead, hence the summoning of cabbages rather than undead when you fight him. This, coupling with the food related quotes, point to his magic leaning towards the kind used by the Culinaromancer.
  • You are allowed to have more than one key for each floor, and this is recommended in the event of getting lost.
  • The lesser demon that serves as the boss of the maze seems to have been previously chained to the wall by Malignius, but has since escaped.
  • There is a room off the map in the NE corner of the basement. (update needed)
