Meditation is a mental discipline where a person attempts to enter a deeper state of peace and awareness.

Vulcans often practised meditation to keep their emotions under control. During the Pon farr meditation could be used to try and control the strong emotions experienced. (VOY: "Blood Fever", "Body and Soul")

One Vulcan technique was called F'as'al. ("Father to the Man")

A meditating Sullustan Jedi.

Meditation was a mental technique practiced by Force-users, by which one attempted to get beyond the reflexive, "thinking" mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness. Many Force-based organizations, such as the Jedi and the Sith used meditation for enhancing emotional control over self and for better connection to the Force. When possible, the meditation could be held in a special place called the Meditation chamber, but this was not an obligatory requirement.

Variations

Several variations of this technique were developed during the history of the Jedi Order. Notable examples include:

  • Floating Meditation, also known as "Rising Meditation" - a meditation technique where Jedi meditated while using the Force to float several inches off the ground.
  • Meditation of Emptiness - a technique used by Jedi to purge oneself of feelings to create an emotional anchor and find a place where there was nothing else but peace.
  • Moving Meditation - a meditation technique where one meditated while repairing or building mechanical devices.
  • Meditative Martial Arts - a technique used by the Matukai and some other Force-based groups, similar to Moving Meditation.
