Contents

Background

The Medal of Honor is awarded for singular, conspicuous acts of individual gallantry and steadfast devotion among Soldiers, Sailors, Pilots, and Marines during times of war and need.[1]

History

Originally created in 1782 by George Washington of the United States of America, the Medal of Honor has been used continuously for almost eight hundred years. Its appearance has remained virtually the same since the 1940s. However, instead of being worn around the neck as the members of the United States military, the UNSC Medal of Honor is a medal worn with all other medals, on the chest of the wearer.

The Medal of Honor, often referred to as the Federation Council Medal of Honor because the President presents the award "in the name of the Federation Council", is the highest military decoration awarded by the United Federation of Planets. It is bestowed on a member of the Federation military who distinguishes himself or herself "... conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the Federation ...".

Members of all branches of the Federation military are eligible to receive the medal. The Medal of Honor is often presented personally to the recipient or, in the case of posthumous awards, to survivors, by the President of the Federation.
