Maxwell Edison was a middle-aged resident of Stockbridge, UFO enthusiast and ally of the Doctor in his fifth, eighth and tenth incarnations.

Biography

Maxwell was twice offered a chance to travel with the Doctor in his TARDIS. He refused both times preferring instead to run the Stockbridge Division of the Bureau for Interplanetary Liaison, a group designed to extend a welcoming hand to visiting aliens. He was, in essence, the Stockbridge "UFO chaser", viewed by his neighbors as a crackpot.

The Doctor first met Maxwell when the latter stumbled into the TARDIS in Wells Woods. He took him into an abandoned alien ship where they went ghost hunting for a mysterious entity. (DWM: Stars Fell on Stockbridge)

Practically the only resident of Stockbridge who believed in his cause was Izzy Sinclair, who eventually joined his organization. It was through Max that Izzy was introduced to the Doctor and eventually became one of his longest-serving companions. (DWM: End Game)

Behind the scenes

• Maxwell Edison's name (but not his personality) comes from the Beatles song "Maxwell's Silver Hammer".
• Although a comics-only character, Max had a certain degree of commonality with the televised character of Wilfred Mott. Given Russell T Davies stated affection for the Eighth Doctor comic strip, it's entirely possible that he served as a sort of springboard for Wilf.
• Max may or may not qualify as a "companion", though his multiple appearances exceed those of other characters considered to be companions, such as one-offs Astrid Peth and Adelaide Brooke.
• Due to make his audio debut in Big Finish's The Eternal Summer, part of the forthcoming "Stockbridge trilogy."
