Matthew Brand Decker was a dedicated Starfleet officer who served during the 23rd century. Decker was one in a line of Deckers to serve in Starfleet, and his son, Willard Decker, by Matt's wife Jane, would become one-time commander of the USS Enterprise. (TOS episode: "The Doomsday Machine", TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek", TOS movie: Star Trek: The Motion Picture, middle name from TOS roleplay module: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)

During his days at Starfleet Academy and his early career, Decker was seen as insubordinate and not command material. Admiral Fitzgerald therefore surprised many, including Decker himself, when he promoted him to the rank of captain. (TOS - The Brave and the Bold novella: The First Artifact)

In 2246, Decker was chief of security at Starbase 4. (TOS - The Brave and the Bold novella: The First Artifact)

By the early 2250s, Decker had risen to the rank of captain and assumed command of the USS Yorktown from Captain Christopher Pike, who went on to assume command of the Enterprise. After commanding the Yorktown for several years, Decker transferred to command the USS Constellation, where he would spend the rest of his career. (TOS novel: Prime Directive)

In 2263, while the Constellation was in the area of space known as the Taurus Reach, Decker's crew discovered what would become known to Starfleet as the Meta-genome. The Constellation was unable to investigate further due to other priorities from Starfleet Command, but Decker's report resulted in the fast-tracking of the construction of the Vanguard station in the Taurus Reach in order to secretly study the Meta-Genome. (VAN novel: Harbinger)

In 2266, Decker responded to a distress call from the Federation colony on Alpha Proxima II, along with Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise. They found civil society on the verge of collapse, due to a plague caused by one of the Malkus Artifacts of the Zalkat Union. Decker and Kirk together resolved to impose martial law on the colony. (TOS - The Brave and the Bold novella: The First Artifact)

Decker was killed in the line of duty in 2267, in combat with the alien doomsday machine that the ancient Preservers designed to combat the Borg. (TOS episode: "The Doomsday Machine"; TNG novel: Vendetta)

Matthew "Matt" Decker was a Starfleet flag officer during the 23rd century.

In the late 2250s, Decker was commanding officer of the Pyotr Velikiy-class USS Tav. James T. Kirk served as his executive officer for a time. (The Starfleet Museum)

By 2267, he had been promoted to the rank of Commodore and commanded the USS Constellation.

In that same year, a Planet Killer crippled the Constellation under his command and killed his crew, whom he'd evacuated to L-374's third planet, leaving him the sole survivor. The USS Enterprise responded, but revenge and grief made Decker unstable. He stole a shuttlecraft, dying in the Planet Killer's maw while trying to destroy the machine. His sacrifice, however, allowed the Enterprise time to disable the machine. (TOS: "The Doomsday Machine")

The novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture suggested Matt Decker was Enterprise first officer Willard Decker's father. (Star Trek: The Motion Picture (novel))

Alternate realities

A now aged Decker appears on a video tape recorded for Captain Kirk.

During the Doomsday War, the alternate Constellation also encountered a Planet Killer. Decker and his derelict ship were discovered by the USS Farragut. Similar as to what happened in the canon timeline, Decker stole Shuttlecraft Jeffries and flew it directly into the weapon. However, he was not killed. His attempt to destroy the machine accidentally caused excess chronitons vented by its anti-proton engine to activate and send the shuttle back in time to 1967. With nowhere else to go, Decker set course for Earth. He was discovered by a woman named Veronica who nursed him back to health. The two shared Decker's secret and lived a long, happy life togther without making any significant changes in this timeline. Later in 2006, Kirk, Spock and McCoy, tracking high levels of residual anti-protons, arrived on Earth and discovered Veronica. Expecting them, she showed the trio a video tape Decker made before he died, explaining how he arrived in this time. The three left with vital information on how to disable the weapons and a gift to Decker's son, Will. (Star Trek: New Voyages: "In Harm's Way")

In the Star Trek: Counter Worlds episode "The Klingon Invasion" Decker pursues a Klingon Battlecruiser that has just destroyed a freighter when he is led into an ambush. Decker is killed by a Klingon spy on board his ship during a fire fight with three Klingon Battle cruisers.

Matt Decker was played by actor William Windom in "The Doomsday Machine", "In Harm's Way", and "The Klingon Invasion". Several other members of the Decker family are featured in the Starfleet Academy comic book series.
