The metaphor of a box was used by Ben to explain one of the secrets of the island to Locke in "The Man from Tallahassee":
| “ |
Benjamin Linus: Let me put it so you'll understand. Picture a box. You know something about boxes, don't you John? What if I told you that, somewhere on this island, there is a very large box and whatever you imagined, whatever you wanted to be in it when you opened that box, there it would be? What would you say about that, John? |
” |
Ben then went on to show Locke a man who he claimed came out of the magic box. The man was gagged and tied to a chair. The man was Anthony Cooper, Locke's father.
When Locke pressed Ben for more about the box in "The Brig", Ben snapped back that "the box is a metaphor, John." Despite this, he continues to maintain that by some agency things that people on the island want or need show up.
In the March 26, 2007 podcast, executive producer Damon Lindelof confirmed that the box reference is a metaphor for something else: "It would be kind of silly to walk to the middle of the island and there's a kind of a big large refrigerator box sitting there and Kate's horse comes trotting out and Sayid's little cat and Jack's dad ... that would be kind of the worst idea in the history of ideas."
In the May 23, 2007 special "Lost: The Answers," producers Cuse and Lindelof commented on the nature of the magic box metaphor, stating that "the entire island is a magic box."

Magic boxes are used in the capture of imps using the Hunter skill. They require a Hunter level of 71 to place. They can be bought in the hunter shop in Yanille and Nardah. When an imp is caught, the magic box will become an Imp-in-a-box. The imp will agree to take two items or stacks from the player to the bank in exchange for its freedom. However, they can randomly refuse and will always refuse to do so past level 20 Wilderness.
Imp-in-a-box can be used by right-clicking on one and choosing "Bank Imp-in-a-box", then a window will come up where the items to be sent to the bank can be selected (be careful to not click twice quickly, because items can move after clicking on the first one). Or simply use an item to be banked with an Imp-in-a-box.
Note that when the box can be used to send two items to the bank it will be labelled Imp-in-a-box(2); when one has already been used, it will be labelled Imp-in-a-box(1) and when both have been used, it will revert to Magic box. If, while attempting to catch imps, a magic box fails to catch a curious imp, it will be labelled Magic box failed, until it is deactivated.
