In the DS version, Cid Pollendina has an ability called Upgrade, which allows him to use certain battle items to give his hammers elemental properties. This could be considered a rough example of the traditional Spellblade ability.
The Spellblade ability is the command ability of the Mystic Knight class. Each level allows for new spells to be taught. Most Black Magic spells can be taught, as well as the White Magic spells Silence and Holy.
Using Materia Fusion, Zack Fair can create Materia that give him the power to use Spell Blade abilities. These Materia include:
Also, there are items equippable that allow for added effects.
Steiner can use Sword Magic as long as Vivi is in the party. Abilities become available when Vivi learns the corresponding Black Magic.
Red Mages learn six 'En' spells fairly early on, which add extra elemental damage to every physical attack.
Also, either through the dances of Dancers or some equipment, one can apply an Aspir/Drain/Light/Dark effect to their attacks as well.
Beowulf Cadmus can use Spellblade with his special Templar Class. The spells are not offensive Black Magic, but instead more powerful versions of Mystic Arts spells, which inflict a myriad of status effects. Beowulf must be wielding a sword in order to use Spellblade.
The Gladiator job class can use Spellblade Tech. This command contains physical attacks and elemental attacks. This ability may have inspired Final Fantasy V 's Gladiator's Finisher command, which executes a very powerful elemental physical attack.
Spellblade is not the name of the ability, but of a class accessible by the Viera. Their Blade Arts inflict status ailments along with normal attack damage.
