A live Macaw figures prominently in the Fraggle Rock episode "Gone, But Not Forgotten." The bird is one of several exotic avians who were let loose in a petstore truck accident. Doc finds him, injured and amnesiac ("Who am I?") on the doorstep of his workshop.

Sprocket becomes fast friends with the bird, feeding him and enjoying the parrot's "Very good doggie" praise. The bird also greets the tinkerer with a cheerful "What's up, Doc?" Sprocket is reluctant to part with his feathered friend. Once the macaw is returned, however, he gives Sprocket a friendly telephone call from Goldberg's Pet Store.

Macaw

The Macaw is a level 41 Summoning familiar. It is summoned by using a Macaw pouch, which will give you 0.8 Summoning experience. Apart from having remote view, which lets you see from its eyes when it flies into the air, it can also improve your herb drops, (especially useful when killing Chaos druids and Aberrant spectres) and collect and store herbs for you. It also has a special move called Herbcall, which can be activated if you have a Herbcall scroll in your inventory. Herbcall has a chance of creating random herbs. Macaws also have a small chance of producing a random herb which you can withdraw from them. This rarely happens though so it is not suggested that you use the Macaw pouch for this reason.

The Macaw is fairly popular among alchemists for its modest Summoning experience and as a passive herb gatherer.

Components: 1 empty pouch, 78 spirit shards, 1 green charm, and 1 Clean guam.

Contents

Macaw pouch

A Macaw pouch is made by using a Summoning pouch on a Summoning obelisk with 78 spirit shards, a green charm and a Guam leaf in the inventory. Making the pouch earns 72.4 experience points. Using the pouch to summon a Macaw gains 0.8 experience points, and costs 3 Summoning points.

Herbcall

A Herbcall scroll enables the use of the Herbcall special move for a Macaw. Using the pouch on a Summoning obelisk creates 10 scrolls. Does not have to be outside, but many underground areas will not work.

Because this scroll can produce all herbs up to and including Torstol, and at a fairly quick rate (drop rate is about 2 in 3 Scrolls), this can be a very productive way to make money or train herblore, though it does require a bit of patience.

NOTE: You cannot use the 'Herbcall' scroll continuously as the Macaw will get tired after you use the scroll, and you will have to wait about 1 minute before you can use the scroll again.

Trivia

  • The examine text is a reference to the Monty Python Dead Parrot Sketch
  • The line the player says about feeding birds alcohol, could be a reference to the quest Eadgar's Ruse where you feed the parrot the alco-chunks.
  • The Macaw is an actual bird that can live up to 60 years.
  • Some players use this familiar to get the Macaw's herb drops.
