Lynne Carol interviewed for Minnie Caldwell Remembered - A Tribute to Margot Bryant, broadcast in 1988.

Welsh born actress Lynne Carol (29th June 1914 - 30th June 1990) played Martha Longhurst for the first four years of Coronation Street 's history. The daughter of a stage actress, Mina Mackinan, Lynne was a child performer acting on stage from the age of three.

Carol made her first appearance as Martha in the second episode and her character's death four years later was a controversial decision by new producer Tim Aspinall, causing Violet Carson to consider resigning in protest.

Lynne continued to act after leaving the programme and appeared in small roles in Hadleigh, Z Cars and Jack Rosenthals Another Sunday and sweet FA. Her last appearance on screen was in 1980s The Black Madonna.

In 1979 she had a small role in the War movie "Yanks" starring Richard Genre.

She married actor Bert Palmer (who also appeared in the Street) in 1934, had entertained troops in the Second World War as part of ENSA and had three children, none of whom followed their parents into the acting profession. At the time of her death she was still living in Blackpool where she and her husband had lived for many years. Their house was named Longhurst after Lynne's character.
