The Lunar spellbook.

The Lunar Spells (sometimes called Lunar Magicks) are in a spellbook that must be earned from the Lunar Diplomacy quest, like the Ancient Spellbook. It consists of 40 spells (originally 33 - an extra 7 must be earned from the Dream Mentor quest). They make use of the Astral rune, and have several new teleportation spells as well as spells which aid in non-combat functions, reducing or eliminating the need for certain items and equipment to carry out certain tasks.

After the Lunar Diplomacy quest, a player may switch to Lunar spells and back to the Normal spellbook by praying at the Astral Altar.

Lunar Magicks is extremely useful when doing clue scrolls for people who have a level of 96 or higher in Magic. They can use the Lunar spell Spellbook Swap (which needs 3 Astral runes, 2 Cosmic runes and 1 Law rune) and cast ANY teleport spell in ANY of the spellbooks.

History

At first, the Lunar spellbook had 33 spells. On 15 May 2007, Jagex added 7 new spells that could be used after completing the Dream Mentor quest. The 7 spells were:

Also, on 18 September 2007, the spell Ourania Teleport was released by Jagex along with the Ourania Runecrafting Altar.

On 2 October 2007, Jagex changed the effects of the Lunar Home Teleport spell so that, if cast on a Non-members world, it would teleport the player to Lumbridge.

The Astral Altar

The spells are in a separate spellbook, and are swapped out with the normal set of spells by praying at the Astral altar south-east of the Moonclan city on Lunar Isle.

It is here that Astral Runes are also crafted via the Runecrafting skill. One interesting feature of runecrafting Astral Runes is that if done with a friend or two, using the Tele Group Moonclan makes it more efficient in terms of spells and runes than simply if one player crafts using the Moonclan Teleport spell, and the caster of the teleport uses no extra runes if an earth staff is wielded other than law runes.

A screen comes up asking the player which NPC he/she wishes to talk to. The choices are Honest Jimmy, Bert the Sandman, Advisor Ghrim, Turael*, Lanthus, Mazchna, Kuradal, Vannaka, Murphy, Chaeldar, Sumona, ,Duradel* ,Cyrisus*, Larry and a random NPC. This can be extremely useful as you can manage your kingdom in Miscellania, collect sand from Bert, find out when the next Castle Wars game starts, and obtain a new Slayer task without having to move from the bank.
* The NPCs marked with * die during While Guthix Sleeps. After this event, the spell contacts the NPCs' replacements, if any: Spria for Turael and Lapalok for Duradel . Cyrisus has no replacement.

Trivia

  • Almost every Lunar spell is defensive in nature or is not combat-related. Only a few indirect offensive spells are in the Lunar Spellbook. Vengeance and Vengeance Other are examples of these.
  • No Lunar spells use chaos runes or soul runes.
  • It is possible to perform the Heal Group spell with another player who can cast it as well. One of the players would have low HP, then both players can simply "spam click" the spell, and they will constantly transfer HP back and forth until one of them runs out of runes. This is a good way for fast exp but its only for players that have a rather large amount of money.
  • The Lunar Spellbook is extremely popular as a support system in large group battles against monsters because of their ability to heal allies and then swiftly heal themselves with Dream; they are especially popular if they have completed Dream Mentor and can use Ancient Magicks because of the Spellbook Swap spell allowing them to use the healing abilities of the Lunar spellbook and aggressive Ancient Magick spells such as Ice Barrage.
  • Currently no Lunar Spells can be autocasted, namely because there are no lunar spells that cause damage, or weaken a target, without having a recharge time.
  • When the Rest feature was added the spell Dream hitpoint restore rate was changed from three times to five times as much.
  • On 28 July 2009 the Lunar spell book received a graphical update.
