History

Solis is one of the New Gods living on New Genesis. As a boy he established a close friendship with fellow New God Orion, who comforted Solis after the death of his older brother. One day Orion and Solis discovered a large hole on the surface of New Genesis which turned out to be an outpost of soldiers from the planet Apokolips. These soldiers had been transformed by an energy bomb into beings composed entirely of solar energy. They bombarded Solis with energy blasts, but Orion was able to fight them off with the aid of his mentor Metron. Solis lay in a coma for a month, but upon recovering realized that he had somehow gained solar energy powers. Solis mastered these abilities and renamed himself Lightray.

Lightray has remained a close ally of Orion in the battle against Apokolips. Lightray's peaceful nature is a natural foil for Orion's sudden fits of rage.

Lightray served one stint as a member of the Justice League. He joined the international branch along with Orion on the same night as a membership drive failed to find other new recruits. [1] The difference between the two was illustrated in battle. While Lightray desired a minimum of fuss in battle by dispatching his foe, Crowbar, with a simple expenditure of energy to the man's face while, Orion prefered to destroy the pavement around Blackrock — and then was angered when his opponent surrendered instead of fighting to the death.[2]

Lightray on his deathbed

Lightray has demonstrated a knowledge of chess. Lightray's long hair caused him to be mistaken for a female by the old fashioned General Glory. They stayed with the team until just after the battle with General Glory's old foe the Evil Eye.[3]

As Solis his idea of fun was protecting New Genesis from Apokolips, Darkseid, and his minions. He resided on New Genesis and was active in adventuring.

Lightray fell to Earth during a meteor shower, creating a crater in the streets of Metropolis. Gravely injured, he was found by Jimmy Olsen. He grabbed the young reporter, said the word "infinite", and after a large flash of light, apparently died.[4]

Powers and Abilities

Powers

Art by Jack Kirby
  • New God Physiology: These New Gods have evolved due to their close proximity to the Source, a primeval energy, believed to be one of the ultimate foundations of the Universal Expression of Energy, along with their superior technology, into beings of genetic stability and evolutionary perfection. The denizens of New Genesis are stronger, faster, and smarter than homo sapiens, despite their resemblance to the same.
  • Immortality: The New Gods, are functionally immortal, having ceased aging physically near the age of 30. Unless they fall in battle, they are immune to the ravages of time, and could easily live for thousands upon thousands of years.
  • Invulnerability: They are resistant to blunt trauma like punches, kicks, and blows from weapons like bats and maces, though not -completely- immune; unless the blows a dealt by a being with similar or greater strength, there just isn't a chance of injury. However, this invulnerability does not extend to bullets, laser-blasts, or other piercing/slicing weapons - their invulnerability is more akin to that of an Amazon, rather than a Kryptonian.
  • Superhuman Strength: As a New God is naturally greater than that of a human man or woman of their (approximate) build and stature who engages in regular intensive exercise, their exposure to the Generation Matrix enhanced that twenty-fold. Their strength can me measured in the hundreds of thousands of tons.
  • Superhuman Stamina: New God stamina and endurance is nothing short of amazing. Due to the naturally exhausting and extensive rigors of their life on Apokolips or Stamina training on New Genesis, a New God is able to manage their stamina on a certain amount of rest and sustenance (more than minimal) so that it seems they are able to constantly function, though this is not entirely the case. Tied directly to their strength and invulnerability, even their immunity to a certain extent, They can actually function at peak efficiency for almost 48 hours before needing to eat and rest off the stress.
  • Superhuman Reflexes: Like all New Gods, they have a highly developed nervous system. Their reaction speed and eye-hand coordination is superior to a normal human's. They can move fast enough dodge a bullet before the gun fires and react with blinding speed.
  • Superhuman Immunity: New Gods has an extremely evolved immune system. It explains how some are able to survive on Apokolips for years without dying of a dozen diseases and toxins. In addition, he has developed immunity to a number of toxins and diseases.
  • Solar Energy Projection: Lightray could project solar energy; creating brilliant light and extraordinary levels of heat. Using his power to the utmost he can generate a miniature sun as he did to escape the Black Racer.[5]
  • Solar Beams: He could focus his solar energy into beams of laser-like intensity
  • Illusions: he can use light to create lifelike illusions.
  • Light Speed Flight: He can also fly at the speed of light; 'maybe even faster' according to friend David Lincoln.

    Weaknesses

Radion: New Gods are vulnerable to a substance called Radion. It source is unknown and its effects are toxic only in sustained amounts or after explosive exposure. The average New God can be slain by an application of Radion from a Radion blaster or bomb. More advanced beings such as Mister Miracle, protected by their mother box, armor and sheer toughness, have been known to take two hits and survive. Radion, must be hard to come by, because if it was not, Darkseid would obviously equip more of his troops with it. Perhaps it requires the mysterious Element X to create it.
