Liberty Prime docked in the Citadel Laboratory

Liberty Prime (sometimes referred as Prime by BoS members) is a U.S. Army pacification robot. Standing at forty feet tall and armed with a variety of weapons, Liberty Prime is a nigh-unstoppable killing machine whose sole purpose is to destroy any and all "communists" (a label which it will inappropriately apply to any enemy combatants, as the primary enemy of the United States at the time it was created was Communist China).

Contents

Background

The original purpose of Liberty Prime was to aid American troops in the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from communist China. Through the computer terminal at the foot of Liberty Prime, it is revealed that the project was commissioned by General Constantine Chase and was a joint effort between the U.S. Army, General Atomics, and RobCo. (He is, presumably, the "technological marvel" mentioned in the Brotherhood's faction profile, and the unknown super weapon referenced in one of the newspaper cuttings that appears in the game.) However, problems with the power system led to delays, and ultimately Anchorage was liberated by America in a much longer and more costly battle using their other secret weapon, the more successful and reasonably-scaled T-51b Power Armor.

Roughly two centuries later, Liberty Prime is finally pressed into service by the Capital Wasteland Brotherhood of Steel after they find him in the basement of The Pentagon. Liberty Prime would finally be completed by the Brotherhood of Steel in 2277, after which the massive robot led a Brotherhood attack against the Enclave based at the Jefferson Memorial, ironically mistaking the Enclave troops for a Chinese invasion army and spouting anti-communist propaganda statements throughout the battle.

Liberty Prime requires a massive amount of power to operate, and the Brotherhood of Steel was long unable to power him properly even with the advanced tech discovered inside the Pentagon. With the aid of Madison Li, they eventually solve this problem. His large backpack holds a seemingly inexhaustible supply of nukes, similar in potency to a Mini Nuke but several times larger. He can remove and hurl these nukes at enemies like a quarterback throwing a pass. He is also equipped with twin head-mounted lasers which will kill anything in a single hit. His massive size and strength count as weapons too: he is endowed with strength befitting a forty foot tall robot, and can rip anything in his path to shreds... if he doesn't step on it first. He also appears to have an energy shield, as he can sustain massive amounts of damage and short out energy barrier fields by forcefully walking into them. Finally, to inspire his allies and demoralize foes, he constantly spouts anti-communist phrases (like most of the servitor/combat robots in the game, he seems unaware that any time has passed between 2077 and the present).

Interactions with the player character

Main article: Take it Back
Main article: Death From Above

He is first seen in the lab beneath the Citadel in his inactive state. The player can gain information about Liberty Prime as well as hear some of his dialogue by using a nearby computer terminal to initiate a dialogue test.

During the events of Take it Back!, the Brotherhood of Steel (with the cooperation of Dr. Madison Li) manages to reactivate the robot, who then proceeds to clear the way for the Lyons' Pride to the Jefferson Memorial, where he remains until the end of the game. Despite the sense of urgency imparted to the player to protect him in this mission, Liberty Prime is in no way endangered by the Enclave forces, and at his size moves so fast that keeping ahead of him is rather difficult. He is entirely capable of defeating the Enclave all by himself, and will do so quite enthusiastically.

During Broken Steel, Liberty Prime joins the player in the battle against the Enclave during Death From Above. After the Enclave initiates an Orbital Strike, Liberty Prime will crawl from the wreckage and initiate a self-destruct sequence to prevent his capture by the "communists". His head, both feet and what appears to be a forearm are later taken back to the Citadel. Similar to Deputy Weld, his head can be activated and he will say some of his anti-communist phrases, albeit scrambled and garbled. At the conclusion of the main quest line, Scribe Rothchild states that the Brotherhood will rebuild Prime, but it might take months to years.

Appearances

Liberty Prime in Broken Steel.

Liberty Prime appears only in Fallout 3.

Notes

  • After Prime is destroyed, his head is found in the Citadel, as well as where he was destroyed.
  • The American Soldiers in the Operation: Anchorage DLC use some of the propaganda slogans Liberty Prime recites continuously.
  • After Liberty Prime is destroyed, Three Dog may comment on his "death" and let wastelanders know that whatever could possibly take down Liberty Prime scares him.
    • In that same news report, Three Dog says that Liberty Prime was 100 feet tall, but that may just be a made-up number he uses to explain to his listeners that Liberty Prime was huge.

Behind the scenes

  • Liberty Prime is humanoid in shape, and somewhat resembles the title character of the movie The Iron Giant, but possesses the head (and laser vision) of Gort from the 1951 version of The Day The Earth Stood Still.
  • According to an interview in 1UP Emil Pagliarulo denied any intentional relation between Liberty Prime and Optimus Prime. Pagliarulo admitted he could have made the reference subconsciously, as he sometimes is known to do.[1]
  • Liberty Prime's death animation is the exact same as Frank Horrigan from Fallout 2's if the player chose the Bloody Mess perk in that game.

Bugs

  • Liberty Prime can get stuck on the left side of the highway when heading to install the G.E.C.K. Going forward and fighting some enclave soldiers can fix this problem.
  • It is possible that Liberty Prime will have path issues on the first large bridge you cross, and get "stuck" requiring you to reload a save. Sometimes these path issues can be resolved by destroying the junked cars on the bridge, or by fast-traveling to the Citadel (only an option if you are out of combat). If he gets stuck behind a car simply blowing it up will work; however there is a possibility an Enclave Vertibird will crash in his path, in which case nothing but a MIRV will budge it. Sadly this makes all Brotherhood forces except Sentinel Lyons hostile towards you.
  • Liberty Prime will sometimes simply not move from his starting location. This is sometimes caused by the death of one of the Paladins (such as by the hands of the player), and can be fixed by finding the body (typically within the entry corridor to the Citadel) and carrying it past Prime and over the footbridge.
  • The player can make Liberty Prime hostile to themselves by shooting at it for a while, but can freeze if too much damage is done, possibly because of the disruption to its routine.
  • Once you complete the Broken Steel add-on, you can find Liberty Prime's severed head in the Citadel, but at the same time you can find it on the ground at the Satellite Relay Station.

Quotes

Liberty Prime spouts a wide array of overly patriotic and anti-communist phrases, in a booming voice that can be heard at great distances (no doubt to inspire fear in his enemies). Many of the quotes are grandiose in nature and can be seen as comic relief due to the contradictory and hypocritical nature of them.

Following the destruction of Liberty Prime, he will still say some of his quotes but in a garbled manner.

  • "COMMUNISM IS A LIE."
  • "DEATH IS A PREFERABLE ALTERNATIVE TO COMMUNISM."
  • "COMMUNISM IS THE VERY DEFINITION OF FAILURE."
  • "CHAIRMAN CHENG WILL FAIL...CHINA WILL FALL!"
