Biography

Arrival

In September 2006, Liam arrived in the Rovers Return Inn to visit his sister and, upon hearing Adam Barlow's dis-satisfaction at running Underworld, manipulated a naive and over-confident Adam into selling his 40% share for £80,000 (less than half it's value). Upon his arrival he briefly romanced resident Frankie Baldwin, in a comical misunderstanding he thought that Frankie was a transsexual when in fact Hayley Cropper was the person being discussed. Liam confessed to sister Michelle the truth about the death of her late partner, Dean, revealing that during the car accident which claimed Dean's life, their brother Paul had been driving and was thus responsible for his death. Paul and Liam had plotted to move Dean's body to the driving seat to prevent Paul from facing criminal charges. Michelle was horrified by Liam's confession and initially disowned both her brothers. Michelle later reconciled with Liam.

Paul's death

Liam was once in a relationship with Leanne Battersby, before discovering her secret life as a prostitute. Her secret was revealed after her services were hired by Paul. Leanne was later kidnapped by Paul, and locked in his car boot. After jumping a red traffic light at a crossroads, Paul's Mercedes crashed into a skip and overturned. Paul was killed in the crash and Liam rescued Leanne from the boot of the car. Carla Connor, Paul's wife revealed to Liam that Leanne was working as a prostitute. Despite attempts to rekindle their relationship, and Leanne's apparent continued feelings for Liam, the relationship could not survive the revelation.

Relationship with Maria Sutherland

Liam initially took a shine to Maria Sutherland and after dumping Leanne set his sights on her. He flirted with her constantly. Just a few weeks into their relationship Maria revealed she was pregnant. Liam insisted he would support her and later on proposed after a row with Carla, and she accepted happily, however, Liam still had feelings for his sister-in-law Carla.

During a trip to the Lake District in January 2008, Liam fell down a ravine whilst trying to rescue the couple's dog, Ozzy. When Liam regained consciousness his first words were to call for Carla, which raised Maria's feelings of insecurity. Maria began to plan the couple's wedding whilst Liam was still in hospital to cement their relationship. During an argument with Carla about her new relationship, Liam kissed Carla passionately. She eventually pulled away but was left confused about her feelings for him. Liam was also confused about his feelings for Carla, and continued to interfere in her relationship with Tony Gordon, trying to split them up.

Affair with Carla Connor

Carla attempted to create opportunities to pursue a relationship with Liam, such as hiding from him the fact that a double room rather than separate rooms had been booked for a conference they were to attend together. At the conference Liam and Carla got very close but Carla's plans were ruined when her boyfriend Tony turned up at the hotel. Prior to Liam and Maria's wedding, a further kiss ensued between Liam and Carla, but Liam still married Maria.

Maria & Liam's heartbreak

Towards the end of April 2008 Maria was horrified to discover that her baby was no longer kicking. Maria was escorted to hospital without Liam beside her to receive the news that her child had died. When she went into hospital again and gave birth to the deceased infant - she had decided that Liam should not know about the end of her pregnancy. Because the pregnancy was so advanced, the midwives advise her to have labour induced straight away.[1]

After the stillbirth of the couple's baby boy, Maria still decided to keep the news from Liam and hid from him at Audrey's. In fact, Liam only found out about his child's death from the midwife when she called to check on Maria. The newly-married couple had a huge argument which climaxed in Maria declaring that the marriage was over just under three months into it. With Maria walking out on him Liam went into a short depression and sought comfort in Carla, sleeping with her. He and Maria theb considered a new baby on their return. Carla began to blackmail him into selling his share of the factory to Tony. He signed over his 40% share for ₤180,000 pounds in an attempt to keep the truth of his infidelity from Maria.

Lad Rags

Liam and his cousin, Tom later planned to start a new business called Lad Rags together, but Tom failed to obtain 50k to begin. This eventually led Carla into the situation, making her part of the business, which made Liam feel frustrated and was furious with Tom, although he did not tell Maria about the situation. It was evident that Liam still had strong feelings for his old flame.

Liam's murder

In October 2008 upon seeing Carla in her wedding dress, Liam reignited his passion with her as they slept together once more. On the day of Tony and Carla's stag and hen parties respectively, Liam met with Carla, told her that he loved her and urged her to call off the wedding. During the day Liam rang and sent text messages to Carla, appealing to her to do the right thing. Meanwhile, Tony was quietly suspicious and correctly guessed that Liam was secretly contacting Carla. Meanwhile Carla was convinced by Leanne to follow her heart and pursue Liam. Her words struck a chord and Carla decided to end her engagement with Tony and go with Liam, however it was then revealed that Maria was pregnant. Carla was heartbroken and, not wanting to be the one to take away the unborn child's father, urged Maria to tell an unknowing Liam the news.

Death

Liam was murdered during Tony's stag do after Tony had secretly arranged a hit and run car accident. Liam had left the money, that had been gathered for the stag do, in the pub that they had just left and was told by Tony to rush back and get it, however, as Liam was walking backwards across the road he was hit by a car at high speed. In tears, Tony fell to the floor, and ordered everyone to move out of the way and call an ambulance. As the rest of the stag party called for an ambulance Tony whispered the words "Looks like the best man lost" as well as "Brother", "Son", "Father" and "Roadkill". Moments after the incident, Maria arrived to tell Liam the news that she was pregnant however she was distraught to find him dead. It seemed that Liam has been killed upon impact and could not be saved despite the paramedics' efforts. News of Liam's death spread quickly over Weatherfield as friends and relatives mourned his passing. Near the end of the episode it showed that Tony had actually taken Liam's wallet, he took out the money then threw the wallet into a canal.

Beyond the grave

At his funeral it was revealed on his coffin plate, that his birthdate was 25th February 1974.

Maria gave birth to his son, named Liam Connor Jr. in July 2009. His killer Tony Gordon helped her deliver the baby.

Liam Pace is the lead singer of Drive Shaft, and Charlie's older brother.

Biography

Liam gives Charlie the DS ring. ("Greatest Hits")

Charlie and Liam formed a band called Drive Shaft. Early on in their musical career, the group were driving to a gig, when suddenly one tire of their van blew. Charlie explained that he had had enough of band-life and was ready to quit, much to Liam's dismay. Suddenly they heard "You All Everybody" on the radio for the first time, and celebrated. Charlie decided to stay with the band. ("Greatest Hits")

Liam became a drug addict while touring with Drive Shaft.

One Christmas, Liam gave Charlie his great-grandfather's DS ring, a Pace family heirloom that their mother had given to Liam. Charlie refused, but Liam explained that out of the two of them Charlie is the one who is going to have a family and live past 30. Charlie then said he would hold the ring for his brother but that he would not take it from him. ("Greatest Hits")

Some time later, at a gig, Liam stole Charlie's lines. Charlie became angry with Liam when he saw him retire to the dressing room just after a show with a girl in one arm and a wrap of cocaine in the other. At another show, Charlie entered Liam's dressing room, ordering Liam's girls to get out. The main singer had missed the sound-check, and seeing his brother in the state that he was in, Charlie asked Liam to make good on his promise to walk away. Liam refused, saying that without the band, Charlie was nothing, and he stormed out of the room. Just afterward, Charlie saw Liam's heroin stash and took some of it, leading to his own addiction. ("The Moth")

Charlie leaves to catch his plane. ("The Moth")

Because of Liam's destructive habits, the band began to lose its magic, reduced to recording advertising jingles based on "You All Everybody", their one hit song. For example, "You All Every Butties" was recorded as a commercial for Butties Diapers. However, Liam's drug problems made even this impossible, as he was too wasted to be able to follow simple directions.

Liam married a woman named Karen with whom he a daughter Megan, named after his mother. He missed Megan's birth while out getting a fix, an event that seems to have been key to him realizing that he needed to get his life back together. In order to get as far away from temptation as possible, Liam quit the band and sold Charlie's piano (a gift of priceless emotional significance to Charlie) for plane ticket money to allow him to emigrate to Sydney. Karen's uncle promised him a job in Sydney, and he successfully underwent rehab while there. ("Fire + Water")

Liam refused Charlie's offer to reform the band for a comeback tour, but offered to help get Charlie off heroin. During this encounter, he refuted Charlie's claim that it was his fault that Charlie was an addict. ("The Moth")

Cultural references

  • The name Liam, as Charlie's brother in the band Drive Shaft parallels Liam Gallagher, the brother of Noel Gallagher, both members of the real life band Oasis, a group that had a strong influence on the conception of Drive Shaft. (Backstage with Drive Shaft)
