Learning the Ropes was the quest players completed when creating and learning how to use their character. It was a tutorial quest, and replaced Tutorial Island on 14 July, 2008. However, in a post on the official RuneScape forums, Mod Osborne said that until further notice, new players will have to play through the old tutorial (Tutorial Island). It has been recreated since then and is now known as Unstable Foundations, as of the 17 September, 2009

Official quest description: No QuestHelp description
Release date: 14 July, 2008 (Update unknown) edit
Start: Tutorial Cellar
Difficulty: *****
Length: Medium
Members only: No
Requirements: None
Items needed: None
Monsters to kill: Goblin (level 2)

Creating your character

Before you get started, you must create your character. You must fill in a few things: Mouse, Gender, Head, and Body options. The Mouse menu is to choose how many mouse buttons you have: one or two. The Gender menu lets you decide your character's gender (male or female). The Head menu lets you decide what your character's hair, skin, and beard will look like. The Body menu lets the player decide what the avatar's clothing and body will look like. The Creating your Character part of the tutorial reminds you that all settings put in can always be changed at a later date.

The Mentor

After you customize your character, you must speak to Sir Vant, a White Knight. He will tell you that he is there to fight a large, dangerous, three-headed dragon. A cutscene will follow, with Sir Vant attempting to defeat the dragon.

Defeat the Goblin

While he is fighting, he will warn you that a goblin had come down from the village to steal money. The goblin cannot hurt you, because it had been stunned by some falling boulders. After you kill the goblin and pick up its drops (bones and three coins), Sir Vant Will tell you about things like drops and your inventory.

Prepare to Ascend to the Surface

Vant will tell you about your Quest List, death, and random events. He will then ask you to get him some supplies. Right as the player continues to the surface of Lumbridge, the three-headed dragon appears again, along with a mysterious chaos druid. Sir Vant tells you to go to Nemarti and quickly get a training bow and arrows to kill the druid, which is helping the dragon. Go upstairs. Use the run button to reach the next tutor.

Practice Ranged

A player shooting the ranged practice target.

Next, you must go to Nemarti, the Ranged Tutor. Nemarti can be found near all the other Combat Tutors. She will give the weapons to you and tell you to practice on the targets before facing the druid. Go back down to Sir Vant and kill the Chaos Druid (Level 13) with your arrows.

Note: You will have to use long-range, so you can no longer have 0 defence xp.

A player helping Sir Vant by killing the Chaos druid.

The next few sections can be completed in any order.

The Bank tutor

Follow the arrow towards the staircases in Lumbridge Castle. Climb to the top floor to reach the bank. Talk to the Bank tutor to open your bank account. Deposit an item, then drag it into the + sign to start a new tab. After you have mastered tabbed banking, you will be finished with this section.

Fish for Crayfish

Next, go to Finlay, the Fishing Tutor. He will give you a crayfish cage for catching crayfish. You finish once you catch two crayfish and read the skill interface.

Cook some Crayfish

Next, go to Cordero, the Cooking Tutor. He will teach you how to cook the crayfish. You will always burn your first crayfish. The next one will always be successful. Go back down to Sir Vant and give him the crayfish.

Obtain a bag of runes

Sir Vant tells you to get some runes from Mikasi for him so he can weaken the dragon. Mikasi is found near the Ranged tutor. Mikasi will give you some mind runes and air runes, but will not trust you with more advanced runes until you master magic. Once you cast wind strike on the magic dummies, she will give you a bag of runes. Give this to Sir Vant.

Learn about Prayer

Talk to the Prayer Tutor, Yauchomi. Look at your prayer list and use Thick Skin. Play the organ, then view your prayer list again to see that your prayer points have drained to zero. Recharge your prayer at the altar, talk to the tutor, then bury your bones.

Mine copper and tin ore

Visit the Lumbridge Mine and talk to the Mining Tutor, Monlum. He will give you a bronze pickaxe. Prospect the rocks until you find copper ore. Mine it, talk to the instructor, then prospect the other set of rocks to find tin ore. Mine it as well. This section and the Smithing Section can be skipped and the quest can still be finished.

Smith a woodcutting hatchet

A player fishes for crayfish.

Talk to Feoras, the Smelting Tutor to learn how to use furnaces. Smelt your tin and copper to retrieve a bronze bar.

Back in the mines, talk to Sani the Smithing Tutor to get a hammer and learn how to smith items on an anvil. Make a bronze hatchet.

Chop down trees for logs

Talk to Wilfred the Woodcutting Tutor. He will tell you to cut down a tree with your hatchet to obtain some logs. Do so.

Prepare a fire

Visit the general store and talk to the shopkeeper. Trade with the shopkeeper and buy a tinderbox with one of your coins. Visit Sir Vant and talk to him. Make a fire in the designated spot by using your tinderbox with your logs.

Talk to Sir Vant. He will briefly explain cooking on a fire. Next, you will gain access to the emotes menu. Try an emote. Next, open up your music player and play a song of your choice. Open up your friends list, ignore list, clan chat, and options lists. Then adjust the text filter buttons at the bottom of the screen. View the report abuse screen to finish the tutorial. Talk to Sir Vant one last time, then climb up the ladder to begin playing RuneScape!

  • 1 Quest Point
  • Two 250 experience lamps which grant experience to any skill used while helping Sir Vant (Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, Mining, Smithing, Fishing, Cooking, Firemaking, Woodcutting, or Prayer.)
  • The Ability to chat freely.
  • The Ability to explore the rest of RuneScape.

Music tracks unlocked:

  • The Mentor
  • The Adventurer

  • There is a hint arrow below the player's feet during the whole tutorial.
  • Like the final stage of the quest Demon Slayer as well as several member's quests and minigames, the version of Lumbridge with the barricades is only visible and accessible by players taking the tutorial. In this version of Lumbridge, there are few differences from normal Lumbridge.
  • This is the first free quest to be released since RS2 beta.
  • In the quest journal for Learning the Ropes, players who had completed the old tutorial before this quest was released see a description of the old tutorial instead of the new one. Players who had started playing before the release of the old tutorial still see the description of Tutorial Island. Also, players who logged out while on Tutorial Island are still on the island.
  • Everyone who had started playing prior to the release of the new tutorial received one Quest Point when the new tutorial was released. This quest point satisfied the Tears of Guthix requirement for that week.
  • While down in the mine, you can examine an anvil and it will say 'Stop! Hammer-time.' (This is a parody of the famous line in MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This")
  • Upon examining the water dripping from the cave's ceiling, it will say "A puddle, not to be mistaken with a poodle."
  • You can die in the tutorial, and if you try to repair or bless your grave it will simply say 'gravestone'
  • One of the barricade guards has the old face model, instead of the new one as shown below.

File:Oldfacemodel hd sd.png

  • You cannot leave Lumbridge, talk, see other players that are doing the tutorial, or work for NPCs.
  • You cannot go through the gate to access the cows. If you examine the gate it says 'this gate has been fastened in'.
  • Range was the main attack style of the tutorial.
  • Everyone who had started playing prior to this quest can visit Sir Vant. If players select the option to say you will help him fight the dragon, he will give the player two 250XP antique lamps.
  • If you have died in the tutorial but lost all except 3 of your items, and then finish the tutorial, you will regain all items when you enter into the non-tutorial Lumbridge.
  • There was a small bug in the new tutorial where if you visited the general store, you could buy the items that were being sold by people who had completed the tutorial. This resulted in players defeating the druid with low level armour and dying to abuse a bug and retain the armour when they completed the tutorial.
  • Another bug meant that on the player design screen, if a player moved the mouse over the colour in the bottom-left of the colour interface, the text in the corner of the screen would say "Choose colour m+mmm+m+".
