Latency is another name for the transfer delay on a data connection, e.g. between a server and a client.

This is quite important because if an important event occurs (e.g the server registers someone casting a spell) the news of that event have to travel to your PC, and your reaction to that event has got to travel back. The longer that takes, the less time remains for you react. If your round-trip latency ("ping", measuring the time a data packet needs to reach the other end and come back) is 250ms, a 1/4 second activated skill will have hit you before your reply even reaches the server.

Lag is not directly caused by the "speed" of your connection measured in bits/s (called "throughput"), but it is affected by how many "hops" (intermediate stations) there are on the connection, and how "clogged" these are (i.e. how long data packets have to wait before it's their turn to be sent), and even by how much data is collected into a single data packet (if your data waits for a larger data packet to fill up before it is sent, it has to wait longer = more latency).



When a player is suffering from lag it means his or her computer or internet connection is causing a delay in his or her awareness of what is going on in the game. This is normally caused when the data packets sent take longer than normal to reach the server and/or vice versa.

Lag can adversely affect game play in many ways, for example when a party is attacking a mob, a lagging player will see monsters in places they no longer occupy, reduce the time a person has to interrupt a skill, will hit monsters that have already died and react to conditions that no longer persist. E.g. Try to heal someone who is dead or remove a hex that is no longer there. In the eyes of the party, the player will be standing around, then running at a corpse, then casting a meaningless spell. In a very bad case of lag a player may not be able to move at all for a short amount of time.

Lag may also cause rubber banding whereby a player moves to a location then immediately appears back where he or she came from; this may occur multiple times before a player can walk properly again.

Heroes and Henchmen are not affected by lag, the server controls them even if you are lagged out.


Ping is a tool used to measure the transfer speed of client and server packets to each other. A packet is sent to the server and back. The time that this takes is measured in milliseconds. A lower ping is better; a ping of less than 200 will appear lag-free in Guild Wars.

Users can monitor their ping through the Performance Monitor by placing their cursor over the small round icon on the player's screen just above the bottom right corner.


  • Typing /stuck, /jump or any Emote will request the server for your current location, this can be used when you think you have gone out of sync with the server.


  • Check your connection for physical interference; if you have other hardware connected to the internet line they may be interfering with the transfer of data. This is especially true with dial-up and DSL connections.
  • If you share your connection with multiple machines through a router or similar device, peak activity can cause heavy lag, as well as bandwidth reduction (see the next note, which also applies for other clients on your network)
  • Close all other internet-related programs on your computer to reduce lag (especially instant messengers or video conferencing software).
  • If you have a wireless network, latency can be compounded by signal interference or physical obstruction. Try to move closer to your router or access point, if possible, and ensure that as few walls as possible are blocking the line between you and it.
    • Some seemingly unrelated devices like wireless mice and cell phones can jam or scramble wireless signals through interference. If you suspect this may be happening, experiment with the device on and off. Older microwave ovens in particular have been known to do this.
  • Occasionally, individual Guild Wars servers may have problems. If you experience severe lag only in a certain mission area, try starting that mission from an international district (note that if the server's IP range does not change this is unlikely to help, except in the case where that particular server is overloaded).
  • If your internet service provider gives you dynamic IPs and you have noticed that they can be from different ranges, try disconnecting from your ISP and reconnecting until you get an IP from a different range. Sometimes a different IP range may have fewer network "hops" to traverse to the game servers, resulting in improved latency.

In-game consequences

While playing with lag is no fun for anyone, certain professions suffer from bigger drawbacks than others:

  • Any melee class suffers from more rubber banding than ranged or caster classes, because they have to run around more.
  • Interrupters have an especially hard time, for obvious reasons.
  • Playing a monk can be difficult because you might not be able to save a person's life before they die.

Lag, from "lag behind", is a slang term for slow Internet speeds or Internet latency; Lag is sometimes due to a server problem, but more frequently due to the connection between client and server.

Lag Slang

A lagger (occasionally designated as a High Ping Bastard or HPB) is someone who uses a relatively slow 56 kbit/s modem to connect to the Internet and through Xbox LIVE, then joins a multiplayer online game (usually a first-person shooter) and who therefore has a high ping time. In synchronous games, where all clients must know the exact game state, a single "lagger" will slow down the game for everyone, since the server has to wait for the client to get every communication packet. However, many online games use an asynchronous communication model, allowing the clients to continue even if they drop occasional packets. A high-pinger who does not inhibit the overall performance, just his own, is sometimes known as a High Ping Bait.

Low Ping Bastard or LPB is a phrase that originated during the time when Quake was a highly popular multiplayer online first-person shooter. The term came into common usage when broadband Internet connections first came into the reach of home users and were competing with people limited to a 56 kbit/s or slower modem connection. This term was so widely used because of the havoc wreaked upon the other users of these servers by the LPBs due to their overwhelming advantage in reaction time afforded by their connection.

A 56ker is a slang term for a person using a 56 kilobit modem connection. These connections are considered to be slow compared to modern broadband connections and generally result in lewd complaints from other higher bandwidth participants in the game or channel.


Lag can be used, surprisingly, in modding. Some mods are factually designed around lagging all the users except the modder himself, but actually sometimes are caused by accident when a modder makes something spawn out of a weapon, and somebody uses that weapon a lot and spawns loads, this normally lags the modder and forces him/her to restart his/her Xbox as it crashes.


In many cases, lag can be reduced. For Xbox players, just unplug your modem for 30 seconds, plug it back in and then reconnect. For PC users, you can do the same and a lot more. You can change your TCP/IP settings. Since some lag is caused by the system itself, you can perform system maintenance regularly or use commercial software for thorough maintenance. If you are using the same modem and internet connection for your Xbox and PC, and both of them are running at the same time, you can set all the PC's application's bandwidth allocation to the least, or to "co-operative".

People using wireless connections should use relatively good and reliable routers with a good wireless reach distance. Wireless connections can cause a lot of lag if there is not a clear path from the wireless router to the Xbox. This also includes making sure there is no large pieces of metal that could potentially form a barrier for the wireless signal.

Lag is the delay of data transmission between two digital devices.

While considered a glitch by many, lag is not exactly the same. Lag may be caused by a glitch or person. But it typically has to do with the server space and a player's own computer. The amount of lag depends on several factors, such as server load, internet connection, and computer specifications. Lag always exists, from undetectable to complete connection loss. Lag is not fixable by Jagex. Lag is a very common cause of death. Hence, one should NOT partake in dangerous activities will suffering from lag, like playing barrows, player killing, bosshunting or fighting any powerful monsters. Players experiencing lag often become impatient and attempt to deal with the situation.


Lag and RuneScape

Lag can cause a delay in displaying a player's Friends List.

There are several types of lag in RuneScape:

Computer lag

A typical player with computer lag during the tutorial.

Computer lag is the most common type of lag, often caused by insufficient RAM, CPU power or GPU (graphics processing unit) power. You know you have this type of lag when the game redraws at a very slow rate, causing the animation to be bumpy. Computer lag is more common when a lot of people are standing in an area, forcing the computer to spend more time redrawing.

Windows users may determine what aspect of your hardware is causing the problem (be it CPU, RAM or GPU) by opening the task manager on Windows and switching to the Performance tab. If you are running a single-core CPU, or if your CPU usage is frequently approaching 100%, your CPU may be at fault; if your Physical Memory usage is often above 80%, you should consider upgrading your RAM (the operating system uses this memory sparingly if it is insufficient, and therefore it is rare that more than 90% will be used at a time); if neither of these hardware aspects appear to be problematic, it is likely that your graphics card is at fault.

Mac OSX users may experience slight lag in frame rate without any obvious reason (they will almost always fulfill the hardware requirements in order to play the game smoothly) because the Java software for OSX is produced by Apple and not Sun as on Windows. There is currently no fix for this type of lag and, as such, it is recommended to use a modern computer running Windows, or a perhaps a Linux variant, to play RuneScape.

Windows Vista is often blamed for being the cause of lag on PCs, while in reality, if properly maintained by the user, it is a respectable operating system. In such a case where you might mistake your problem for Vista's inadequacy, it is most likely that the computer's hardware is actually insufficient. If you are unable to upgrade your hardware, or still feel that Vista is weighing you down, it may be beneficial to reformat your computer. All Windows computers (whether Vista or not) experience "bitrot", whereby the computer will gradually feel slower and slower over time (and this is the primary reason for reformatting one's computer), however this theoretically should not affect RuneScape at all and will only make your computer faster on the whole.

Windows 7, Microsoft's follow-up to Vista, is a faster operating system in general and has received much praise as a result. That being said, it uses essentially the same system to render its interface and thus is equivalent to Windows Vista in how it runs RuneScape.

Internet lag

Internet lag is another very common type of lag. It is caused by your internet connection, or your Internet Service Provider. Information is sent from RuneScape to your computer in packages; if these packages become "lost" or corrupted on the way, it may take the RuneScape server a while to realise this and then attempt to correct the error. This form of lag is neither your fault nor Jagex's fault and is typically unavoidable.

If an exception is thrown when attempting client-server communication, the "Connection lost, attempting to reestablish..." message appears in the top-left corner. Then the client attempts to reconnect to the server, which may fail. This may happen if the connection suddenly ends, such as by unplugging the Ethernet cable.

Otherwise, no network error is detected and the client continues to attempt communication with the server until time-out. Everything on the screen will freeze, while it is still possible to manipulate already-existing data such as rotating the camera, scrolling through the chat box, or right-clicking items or objects. If connection is not achieved by a certain time limit (five to twenty seconds), the game will automatically log out.

In extreme cases, if the amount of data allowed between client and server is very limited, data from the server to client is sent first. This includes movement of NPCs and other players, damage, etc. In this case, the player experiencing lag will be unable to move, talk, eat, or provide any input to the server. If the player is in combat at this time, he will not be able to retaliate, even if Auto-retaliate is on. The time-out is irrelevant in this instance, and the player will automatically log out in five minutes (more if in combat). It is not uncommon to watch your character slowly getting killed while unable to retaliate, eat food, run, teleport, or log out.

There is a way to test for lag. Simply type "Lag" into the chatbox. It will appear when you stop lagging (if at all). If it appears immediately, you may be trying to walk past an obstacle that cannot be walked through or around automatically. This is often mistaken for lag.

Server lag

Lag at the server is a rare but nevertheless a form of lag. This happens when the server itself cannot handle the simultaneous requests of all its clients and processes. This is the only lag that is caused by Jagex. It cannot be easily reproduced, and attempting to create this type of lag is reportable under Bug abuse.

If a player tries to access their Friends List whilst suffering server lag, they may briefly see the following message before the list is displayed:

Connecting to friendserver
Please wait...

If a player tries to add a friend while the friendserver is loading, it will say:

Unable to add name - system busy.
The message when adding a friend while the friendserver is loading.

What to do when lagging

If you are experiencing lag, you should...

  • Log out of RuneScape and play other games for a while, then you run RuneScape again. This is mainly because your computer was either just booted up or that your computer hasn't finished its processes and other refreshments yet.
  • Close any memory and/or CPU intensive programs you have running (including web browsers showing animations like Flash).
  • Pause or stop any downloads you have in progress.
  • Be patient and wait.
  • When logged out, reload the page or wait.
  • Try switching to a less populated world.
  • Choose low detail to reduce the memory used by the game.
  • Restart your internet.
  • Perform virus/spyware/malware scans to rid your computer of viruses that can hinder your computers performance.
  • Restart your computer. Often if a computer is left on for an extended period of time (e.g. over night), it will be significantly slower.
  • If publishing a video on any video editing software (e.g. Windows Movie Maker), you should publish after playing.
  • Lower ping worlds generally have less lag.
  • Choose a world that's nearest your location.
  • Try to play on a world that has LootShare disabled by default.

Lag Mettier was a Rebel Alliance ground crew officer stationed at Echo Base around the time of the Battle of Hoth and was captured during the battle.

After his capture, he was transferred to Lusankya, where he spent several years before being sent, along with several other prisoners, to the Xenovet facility on Commenor to be disposed of.

He, along with most of the other prisoners, were rescued in a joint operation between Rogue Squadron and the Katarn Commandos.

Before his capture, he knew Rogue Squadron pilot Dak Ralter.

Lag is a word used to describe latency in a network or internet connection. In tibia, the effects of lag can be anything from you character appearing to walk slower than usual, to your character or creatures "jumping" to different places on the screen, to the Tibia Client appearing to freeze up entirely.

Many people die as a result of lag while they are in the presence of stronger creatures. Sometimes players will even die from easy creatures if the lag lasts long enough.

The causes of lag widely vary from one situation to the next. The likely culprits of lag are:

  • The Tibia game server does not have enough available resources
  • The computer you are using does not have enough available resources
  • Your internet connection is not fast enough to handle the information sent to and from the Tibia game server.
  • Your internet bandwidth is being used by another program
  • Any other reason that the connection between your computer and the Tibia game server may be compromised.

Few things I recommend to do in case you are suffering from heavy lags:

1) Set your keyboard delay to shortest (Control Panel -> Keyboard -> Set both sliders to Short)

2) It would be wise to play in a server closer to your physical location (e.g. players from UK should play in a German server)

3) Go to start -> run -> cmd then type in netstat -n this should show you all the addresses you are connected to (tibia should appear with the ending of :7171). Make sure all the connections are qualified and that there is no disturbing activity. Make sure heavy connection users are not running such as: Anti-Virus update, Windows Update, P2P might also slow you down (UTorrent, eMule etc.)

4) If you came this far there are two possible options:

  • The line is broken (refers only to cable users): contact your cable provider and ask him to verify the line is clean, you might also want to ask if there is any current overload in your location.
  • Your ISP is limiting your connection, in which case you can't do much, best way to resolve this is to turn off your modem and router (if you have one) for 30 min, then turn on the modem and the router, but don't use the connection for another 15 min. Try playing tibia now, it should work fine.

Notice: All that is written here is a recommendation of steps I found useful solving lags. I do not hold any responsibility for damage which might be caused.
