Rise of the Empire era[5]

"What you seek is revenge, Master Arana, and that can only lead to the Dark Side!"
"Perhaps. And perhaps to destroy the Sith, one needs to go to the dark side! Has not the dark side proven stronger, after all? To save the galaxy from the Sith, do we dare not use any weapon?"
―Tsui Choi and Koffi Arana

Koffi Arana was a Human male Jedi Master who served the Galactic Republic as a General during the Clone Wars. During the final year of the crisis, he attended a meeting in the Jedi Temple regarding the Separatist's sieges of the Outer Rim. Arana later survived the initial stages of Order 66, which was the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's order to all clone troopers to murder the Jedi Knights. Arana met with Jedi Masters Tsui Choi, Roblio Darté, Jastus Farr, Ma'kis'shaalas, and Shadday Potkin, as well as Jedi Knights Bultar Swan and Sia-Lan Wezz, in an abandoned spice mine on the world of Kessel.

However, the Sith Lord Darth Vader stormed the meeting. Arana and his fellow Jedi attacked Vader, determined to kill the Sith. After Vader killed Wezz, Potkin, and Ma'kis'shaalas, the Sith deactivated Arana's lightsaber using Potkin's cortosis blade. Choi and Swan managed to wound Vader, cutting off his sword arm. The Sith attempted to deceive the Jedi by surrendering, but Arana insisted that the Jedi kill the Dark Lord. After an argument with Swan, Arana murdered her in order to take her lightsaber and used it in an attempt to kill Vader. Before the Jedi Master could do so, Vader used the Force to throw his detached arm—which was still holding the cortosis blade—into the Jedi's chest, killing him. Vader and the 501st Legion of stormtroopers killed Choi, Farr, and Darté shortly after Arana's death.

Order 66

"There is no Republic, Master Darté. The Senate chose to become an Empire, remember?"
"They were manipulated—just as we Jedi were manipulated by the Clone Wars. Palpatine and Dooku were in league with one another, that much is plain now."
―Tsui Choi and Arana

Koffi Arana, a Human male[3] was born on the planet Turkana.[1] During the Clone Wars—the Galactic Republic's conflict with the Confederacy of Independent Systems—Arana was a Jedi Master who served as a General.[2] At some point during the war, he visited the desert world Tatooine.[6] In 19 BBY, during the final days of the war, Arana attended a meeting in the briefing room at the Jedi Temple on the galactic capital Coruscant. The meeting, which was about the Separatist's sieges in the Outer Rim, was presented by Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. After the meeting concluded, Arana left the briefing room, along with fellow Jedi Melik Galerha, Shadday Potkin and Ma'kis'shaalas.[5] Shortly after the meeting, Arana participated in the battle of the planet Boz Pity.[1]

Arana survived the initial stages of Order 66,[4] which was the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's command to all clone troopers to murder the Jedi Knights. Shortly after this, Palpatine declared himself Emperor of the first Galactic Empire.[5] The forces of the new Empire were aware that Arana had managed to survive Order 66. Arana's image was featured in the final edition of HoloNet News.[6] Arana eventually made his way back to Coruscant and joined the crowds at the base of the Jedi Temple. He watched as Imperial stormtroopers burned the bodies of deceased Jedi at the Temple entrance. Arana witnessed a male Jedi attempt to kill the stormtroopers at the entrance. He and the other Jedi in the crowd—Shadday Potkin, Dass Jennir, Kai Hudorra, and his Padawan Noriah Na—did not join the Jedi, and watched as the man was killed by the trooper's blaster fire.[4]

Ambush on Kessel

Arana: "He needs to die! If you will not kill him, give the lightsaber to me and I will!"
Swan: "Don't give in to your anger, Master Koffi! Beware the dark side!"
Arana: "Whatever weapon I need to kill the Sith, I will take, Bultar Swan."
—Arana kills Bultar Swan

After hiding in the underworld for a month,[1] Arana made his way to the mining world Kessel. He secretly met with Jedi Masters Tsui Choi, Roblio Darté, Jastus Farr, Ma'kis'shaalas, Shadday Potkin, and Jedi Knights Bultar Swan and Sia-Lan Wezz in an abandoned spice mine. The Jedi discussed the fall of the Galactic Republic and the rise of the Galactic Empire. During the meeting, Arana advocated taking the fight to the Sith, even if it meant falling to the dark side. Potkin revealed to Arana and the Jedi that she had leaked false intelligence that Obi-Wan Kenobi would be attending the meeting and added that the Dark Lord Darth Vader was coming to the meeting in hopes of finding Kenobi. As Arana and his fellow Jedi prepared for battle, the Sith Lord stormed the room and demanded to know where Kenobi was. Arana and the Jedi engaged Vader in combat. When Vader killed Wezz, Arana tried to attack Vader from behind but was Force-pushed away by the Sith Lord. After Vader killed Ma'kis'shaalas and was injured by Farr, Arana attempted to attack him again, but the Sith evaded him.[2]

Koffi Arana is slain by Darth Vader.

Darth Vader retreated and killed Potkin, stealing her cortosis blade. The Sith used the blade to deactivate Arana's, Farr's, and Darté's lightsabers. However, Choi managed to slice off Vader's sword arm. Vader feigned surrender, and Arana told the Masters to kill him. Swan stopped Arana, reminding him that because they were Jedi, they did not murder unarmed enemies that had surrendered. Arana further argued that Vader needed to die, and told Swan to give him her lightsaber. Swan implored Arana to not give in to his anger, but Arana managed to seize Swan's weapon, stabbing and killing her. Choi was shocked that Arana murdered Swan, and Arana vowed to avenge the death of Swan and the other Jedi. Arana leaped at Vader with the ignited lightsaber, but the Dark Lord used the Force to throw his severed arm holding the cortosis blade at the Jedi's chest, killing him. After Arana's death, Vader killed Masters Choi, Farr, and Darté with assistance from the 501st Legion of stormtroopers.[2]

The details of Arana's death were filed in a report by Commander Bow, a stormtrooper of the 501st Legion. The official records, which were modified by Emperor Palpatine's advisor Sate Pestage, stated that Arana was killed by his fellow Jedi in a power struggle.[1]

Personality and traits

"Two Sith—only two—and the entire Jedi Order is laid waste. What good have the Jedi teachings been? Kill the Sith. Kill the Sith, and their Empire falls!"
―Koffi Arana

During the Clone Wars, the Human male Koffi Arana[3] defended the Republic as a Jedi General.[2] After Palpatine betrayed the Jedi and declared himself Emperor of the Galactic Empire,[5] Arana believed that the Jedi teachings were weak if only two Sith could destroy the Jedi Order. He advocated killing the Sith Lords and felt that any weapon should be used if it meant saving the galaxy from the Sith. After Vader attempted to surrender to the Jedi, Arana demanded that they kill Vader. Bultar Swan tried to reason with him, but Arana would not listen and told Swan to give her lightsaber to him so that he could kill the Sith. When she refused, Arana murdered Swan with her own lightsaber, stating that he would take whatever weapon he needed to kill the Sith. He was determined to avenge Swan and the other dead Jedi but was killed by Vader.[2]

During the final year of the Clone Wars, Arana wore a set of brown Jedi robes.[5] After surviving the initial stages of Order 66, he wore a set of black armor.[4] When Arana and the other seven Jedi confronted Darth Vader, he wore a set of red armor. Arana used a lightsaber containing a blue crystal.[2]

Powers and abilities

As a Jedi Master, Arana utilized a lightsaber during combat.[2] He managed to escape the first stages of the Great Jedi Purge, and survived in the underworld for one month before he met with the other seven Jedi on Kessel.[1]

Koffi Arana was introduced in the film Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, released on May 19, 2005.[5] Arana was portrayed by actor Gervais Koffi[7] and was retconned to have appeared in Revenge of the Sith by artist Joe Corroney on his blog on[8]

Arana was featured in the book Star Wars Chronicles: The Prequels, written by Stephen J. Sansweet and Pablo Hidalgo. He received an entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.[9] Arana appeared in the second issue of the Into the Unknown story arc, which was the eightieth issue of the Star Wars: Republic comic series. In the comic, he was drawn by Doug Wheatley. Arana received a more prominent role in the standalone comic Star Wars: Purge, written by John Ostrander and penciled by Wheatley.

Joe Corroney's depiction of Arana in the article Republic HoloNet News Special Inaugural Edition 16:5:24—which was featured in Star Wars Insider 84—was originally meant to be a younger depiction of the Jedi Master Qu Rahn, another survivor of Order 66.[8] Hasbro released a comic pack featuring a figure of Arana, along with a reprint of Star Wars: Purge, a figure of Bultar Swan, and Darth Vader's detached sword arm, holding the cortosis blade that kills Arana.[10]
