Katherine "Kathy" Nightingale was the sister of Larry Nightingale and a friend of Sally Sparrow. In 2007, she went with Sally to visit Wester Drumlins, where she was sent back in time to Hull on 5th December 1920 by one of the Weeping Angels. Stranded there, she started a new life, marrying Ben Wainwright and having children including a daughter, also named Sally.

In 1969, the Doctor, working from information given to him by Sally Sparrow, contacts Kathy and enlists her help in sending a message to Sally in 2007, although it would be another 18 years before she is able to do so.

She died in 1987, shortly after writing a letter that her grandson, Malcolm Wainwright, promised to deliver to Sally Sparrow in 2007, per the Doctor's instructions. Unlike Billy Shipton who in order to fulfill his instructions had to be given the date of his death, it appeared that Kathy wasn't given this information as her letter suggested the possibility that might have still been alive for a time after writing the letter.

Viewing Kathy's tombstone in 2007, Sally saw that the birthdate written on it would have made Kathy 18 in 1920, indicating that Kathy lied about her age when she reestablished her life in the 1920s.

The Weeping Angel consumed the potential energy from the time Kathy Nightingale would have spent in the present. (DW: Blink)

Coincidentally, another individual, Julia Hardwick, is also known to have been transported back in time to Hull by the Weeping Angels, only she arrived around 1887 (WC: A Ghost Story for Christmas). Julia died in 1949, but it is not known whether she and Kathy ever met. Julia's tombstone may have been located in the same cemetery as Kathy's.
