IMDb profile

John Bartley, also credited as John S. Bartley, is one of Lost's directors of photography, also known as cinematographers. He is a member of ASC, the American Society of Cinematographers, as well as CSC and ICG [1].

Bartley appears in the DVD extra "Lost in a Day" on the Lost: The Complete Third Season (DVD), including in the meeting of department heads at 2:14 pm, as well as in "Crew Tribute with Evangeline Lilly". Bartley also co-hosted a seminar at the 2009 Hawaii International Film Festival with Zack Grobler, Jim Triplett, and Michael Crowe, entitled "Master Class: "Bringing the Design of Each Episode Together".

Bartley is also know for being cinematographer for the television series X-Files from 1993-1996.[2]

"When I shot The X Files, we blended light and darkness so the audience saw some things, but wasn’t sure whether they saw other things. That added to the aura of mystery. For Lost, we strive for a lot of color saturation, particularly greens. There are also campfire scenes with saturated red tones lighting the darkness, and flash-forward and flashback sequences weaved into each episode. "
