History
Jack Gold was a down-on-his-luck reporter who worked for a tabloid known as the
National Chronicle. Alcoholism and a bad attitude cost him his career at more prestigious newspapers, as well as his marriage to his wife, Annie. Jack was assigned to interview a mysterious man known as Baron Winters and Winters recruited to work for him as part of his "
Night Force". Winter had Jack steal classified documents from the
Pentagon relating to parapsychological study and through them, he learned about a woman named Vanessa van Helsing. Vanessa had been locked up inside the
Potomac Psychiatric Hospital for seven years and a keen perception of occult forces. When Van Helsing was released, she too joined Baron Winters' team and Jack and she grew close, eventually entering into a loveless marriage.
